Privacy reforms: what they mean for ADIA members

On 31 August 2026, the Australian Government released draft legislation - the Privacy Amendment (Personal Data Protection) Bill 2026 - that will change how organisations collect, use and protect personal information.

This is a significant update to Australia's privacy laws and ADIA is working with our Privacy Compliance Committee and the independent reviewer of the ADIA Privacy Code to ensure members are fully supported as the reforms progress.

Read more about what's changing and what it means for your business below.

How ADIA is supporting our members

  • Working with the Privacy Compliance Committee and independent reviewer, The Hon. Terry Aulich, to assess the reforms in detail and ensure the industry's voice is heard.
  • Updating the ADIA Privacy Code (Market and Social Research) 2021. In anticipation of these reforms, the current review already includes several proposed updates - so members inherit an industry-specific framework, rather than having to interpret the general law and the changes themselves.
  • Providing ongoing guidance and protection:
    • A free and unlimited Privacy Hotline plus training and practical resources via the ADIA Academy.
    • Expert guidance from Andrew Maher (Legal), Norine Cruse (Quality Consultant) and Sarah Campbell (Privacy Officer), so members have somewhere to turn with questions as the reforms take shape.
