Welcome to the DFPM Family! ![]() Carina Oltmann is excited to join Emory’s Palliative Medicine Research Department as the Manager of Research Projects. Carina brings over twenty years of experience working clinically and as a researcher in the fields of palliative care, geriatrics and oncology. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts and a Master’s of Science in Social Work from Columbia University. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Palliative Care at Lancaster University, where her doctoral dissertation is focused on the grief and bereavement experiences of family surrogate decision-makers who have lost a family member in the critical care setting. Carina has dedicated her career to palliative care, bridging clinical practice with rigorous investigation to increase equitable access to high-quality palliative care. She speaks nationally and internationally on topics such as optimizing support for surrogate decision-makers, increasing palliative care access and education for the Latinx community, and addressing the unique needs of those living with co-morbid serious persistent mental illness and life-threatening physical illness. Carina is widely published in palliative textbooks and peer-reviewed journals. She is on the editorial board of The Journal of Social Work in End of Life and Palliative Care. Carina is the co-founder of the World Hospice and Palliative Care Social Work Network and is deeply dedicated to the education and training of students and trainees in serious illness communication skills, psychosocial palliative care, and research methodology. In her free time, Carina enjoys travel, long walks on the Beltline with her Cavalier, visits with her daughters who are away at college, and cooking with friends and family. Carina is very much looking forward to supporting the work of the Emory Palliative Care Research Department, where she will manage research projects, support the clinical research coordinators, provide education and mentorship around research design and methodology, and assist with grant writing and management.
