Jesuit Father Michael Castori was quickly and warmly welcomed by isle Catholics earlier this month as Pope Leo XIV announced he would become the sixth bishop of Honolulu.
Whether they were familiar with Father Castori from his previous ministries or saw him for the first time during the Diocese of Honolulu’s May 6 press conference or May 7 celebratory Mass at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu, many expressed gratitude for his appointment and hope for his ministry in Hawaii.
Bishop Larry Silva, the apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Honolulu, met Father Castori briefly in Oakland, California, after the bishop had been leading the Diocese of Honolulu for many years. They were both friends with Jesuit Bishop Michael C. Barber of the Diocese of Oakland. Read more...

“E Hiki Mai Kou Aupuni – Thy Kingdom Come”

From the Office for Social Ministry
“In God everyone is fully themselves.”
Pope Leo XIV’s Regina Caeli address May 3, 2026
“E hiki mai kou aupuni — Thy Kingdom Come.” For Catholics in Hawaiʻi, these familiar words from the Hawaiian Our Father have taken on renewed meaning with the appointment of Honolulu’s Bishop-elect Michael Castori. This holy phrase echoes the prayer of generations and the hopeful message recently shared by Pope Leo XIV in his recent Regina Caeli reflection.
In his May 3 public noon prayer, Pope Leo invited Christians to imagine the difference between what he called the “old world” and the “new world” opened by the Risen Christ. In the old world, value is often measured by status, privilege, influence, and recognition. Yet the Holy Father reminded the Church that the Kingdom of God reveals a radically different way of living. “In the new world into which the risen One leads us,” Pope Leo reflected, “what is most valuable is within everyone’s reach.” In the new world of God’s kingdom, “what is open to all now brings joy. Gratitude takes the place of competition; welcome overcomes exclusion; and abundance no longer entails inequality. Above all, no one is mistaken for someone else, and no one is lost.” No one is forgotten. No one is invisible. As Pope Leo beautifully reminds us: “In God everyone is fully
themselves.” Read more...

Kamiano Center, downtown Honolulu
All are invited to the Global Rosary Relay for the Sanctification of Priests on Friday, June 12 at 11:30am, just before the 12noon Mass at the Kamiano Center. Fr. Pascual Abaya IV, our beloved pastor and rector of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, will open the event. You can join at the Kamiano Center, pray on your own or with your family, or go to the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace Facebook page.
Catholic churches worldwide participate in this event, with each station linked to the next, forming a strong global encirclement through the rosary to pray for our priests: their sanctification, good health, and their personal intentions. The Hawaii participation links our recitation of the Sorrowful Mysteries at the Kamiana Center to the recitation of the Luminous Mysteries from the Basilica Nuestra Señora del Pilar in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and then to the Glorious Mysteries recited by participants at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

Saint of the Week
Saint Philip Neri
1515–1595
Memorial - May 26
Philip Romulus Neri, the third of five children, was born into a middle class family in Florence, modern-day Italy. As a child, his friends and family often called him, “Pippo Buono” (good little Philip), because of his cheerfulness and moral character. Philip’s mother died when he was only about five years old, so he and his two sisters were cared for by their grandmother. He was well educated by the Dominican friars in Florence and later in life acknowledged the good influence they had upon him. By the age of eleven, Philip was known for his piety and prayerfulness, and for making frequent visits to the churches in Florence. Read more...
