Cairns ECOfiesta features live music all day, children's activities, workshops and more than 100 market stalls. Learn to make alternatives to single-use plastics, bring your pre-loved clothes to swap, and find out how you can reduce waste in your home. Operation Fur-Ever HomeDogs and cats in need of loving homes will be hoping to meet their new families this weekend at Operation Fur-Ever Home. To be held at Cannon Park on Saturday 2 June from 9am to 1pm, Operation Fur-Ever Home aims to connect pets available for adoption with potential owners. Eight rehoming organisations will have around 80 dogs and cats available to meet on the day. Photos on more info on the Facebook page. Masters invited to Compete on the ReefRegistrations are now open for the 2019 Great Barrier Reef Masters Games. With just under one year to go, athletes are invited sign up to be part of the four-day sporting carnival. Last year, the Games attracted more than 1200 visitors to the region, as well as hundreds of local athletes. So far, 15 sports are already confirmed for the 2019 games, with more to be announced soon. The Games will include a full social program, supported by The Jack hotel. Ironman traffic changesThe use of public roads is required for the 2018 Cairns Airport IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Championship Cairns and the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3. Changed traffic conditions and clearways will be enforced to ensure the safety of participants and volunteers. The Southern Esplanade (Lagoon) carpark will be impacted from Thursday 31 May. A full closure will apply from Monday 4 June. The carpark will reopen by 5pm on Tuesday 12 June. Changed traffic conditions will apply on Sunday 10 June 2018.

Nature Play awardCentenary Lakes Nature Play has been recognised as the best new play space in Queensland. It took out the Playspace Award at last week’s Parks and Leisure Australia Queensland 2018 Regional Awards of Excellence in Brisbane. The playground, partly funded under the Queensland Government’s Works For Queensland program, was opened in November 2017. It includes interactive features that encourage creativity and exploration of the outdoors. State of Environment ReportCouncil is on the verge of achieving its target to halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, having achieved a 48.9 per cent reduction in nine years. According to the 2017 State of the Environment Report, Council’s greenhouse gas emissions dropped by a further 5.2 per cent last year to take it to within an inch of the target set in 2008. In other achievements, Council has reduced its energy and water consumption, maintained a landfill diversion rate much higher than the state average, provided nearly 19,000 trees for revegetation projects, installed two electric vehicle chargers, and added three cycleway links to promote active travel. View the full report WaterWhys van hits the roadWater education in the Cairns region is about the hit the road, with a brand new interactive classroom on wheels ready to roll into local schools. Cairns Regional Council’s WET – or WaterWhys Education and Training – Van is decked out with interesting information about water conservation, plus games and a drinking water station. The van features activities suitable for difference age groups, including water use scenarios that teach students about how much water is consumed through everyday activities. The van will visit schools across the region and will be accompanied by classroom resources suitable for students from prep to Year 10 through Council’s WaterWhys program.
