Focus on: Domain D (Engagement, Influence and Impact) ![]() Domain D activities focus on developing your knowledge and skills to work with others and ensure the wider impact of your research. Subdomains include engagement and impact, communication and dissemination, and working with others. There are some great activities that will build your credits in Domain D, such as:
Focus on Professionalism: Keeping up to date Keeping your CaRST record up to date will make it easy to track your progress, plan your future development, and prepare for milestone reviews. We recommend recording activities soon after completion while they are fresh in your mind, and you still have access to the evidence you need for recording purposes. 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) One fantastic way to obtain CaRST credits in Domain D is to participate in the 3 Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition (5 credits in Domain D, with additional credits for finalists). The 3MT is a skills development activity that challenges Higher Degree by Research students to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes. Registrations are open now, and we have information and preparation sessions coming up soon. 3MT Information Session 31 May 2022: This session will introduce you to the rules of the competition. Preparing for the 3MT: Everything you need to know 15 June 2022: Presented by Hugh Kearns (ThinkWell) this workshop will cover everything you need to know about the competition, and tips for preparing your 3MT. The 3 Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a national competition that challenges Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students to effectively explain their research to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes. Entry is now open to all HDRs, however, only PhD candidates who have successfully passed their Major Review by the date of their first presentation are eligible to reach the final round. Turbocharge your Writing When: 26 May 2022, 1:30pm - 4:00pm Would you like to know the secret to high output, low stress scholarly writing? Then join us for this workshop presented by Hugh Kearns from ThinkWell to learn how to increase your writing output. Following the workshop you will understand why it’s hard to get started, know how to set a writing plan and stick to it, and how to greatly increase the number of actual words you produce. Register here Flexing your Communication Style When: 1 June 2022, 11:00am - 12:30pm In this workshop you will identify your own preferred communication style and workplace preferences, reflect on how your preferences and communication style influence your workplace relationships, and learn how to “flex” your communication style to allow you to forge positive relationships with colleagues. Register on waitlist Establishing Industry Research Projects When: 6 June 2022, 2:00pm - 3:00pm Many HDR projects include some interaction with industry, and your career may well involve forming university industry linkages. Join Greg Macpherson for this session where you can put your interest in engaging with industry into action, and find out the steps involved when setting up an industry linked project. Register here. The Self-Reflective HDR When: 8 June 2022, 10:00am - 12:00pm Are you keen to improve your success, performance, and wellbeing by learning how to find and use your strengths, understand your personal qualities, characteristics and resources? If you are looking to achieve balance in your life, join Jane Turner Goldsmith for the third session of the Mental Health and Wellbeing series. Register here. Preparing for the 3MT: Everything you need to know When: 15 June 2022, 10:30am - 1:00pm Designed for any HDR student who is thinking about participating in the 3MT® competition, this workshop explains what the 3MT is, how it works, and provides strategies and suggestions to help you win over the judging panel. Do you want to know how to make your presentation memorable, and cope with the inevitable anxiety that comes with presenting? In this session, Hugh Kearns will share all the best ‘tips and tricks’ to be successful in the 3MT. Register here. Please note: all HDR students are welcome to attend this session - you do not need to have registered as a 3MT competitor. Though delivered online, this is a workshop, not a lecture, and breakout rooms will be used so that students can interact with each other. Please ensure audio and video is configured so you can participate. We recommend using a laptop or desktop computer, not a phone for this to work well. Reviving your Life while Doing an HDR When: 12 June 2022, 10:00am - 12:00pm In this final session of the Mental Health and Wellbeing series, Jane Turner Goldsmith will provide the tools needed to pick yourself up or ‘revive’ when facing common concerns for HDRs, including anxiety and stress. This session will include a range of experiential exercises to relax the body, including breathing, meditation, mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation and visualisation. Register here. Sessions will run from 14-17 June, but all sessions will be recorded and sent to registrants after the event.
NewsAcademic Integrity Training Academic Integrity is important for everyone in the University. To support teaching staff in upholding the University’s expectations around Academic Integrity, an online self-paced module covers topics for teaching staff such as promoting a culture of academic integrity and assessment design for integrity. This course has also been made available to HDR students, and can be recognised for CaRST credit. If you are currently teaching, or plan to incorporate teaching in your future career, the Academic Integrity course for staff is recommended. Call for new members - Alliance of Gender Scholars The Fay Gale Centre for Research on Gender invites HDR candidates and EMCRs across the University of Adelaide interested in gender-related research to join the Alliance of Gender Scholars. The Alliance aims to create a community of gender scholars across different research groups and faculties. We do a range of activities, including, development of feminist theories, writing, publication and presentation strategies (which can be claimed as CaRST hours).
