Kia ora e hoa,

What does a painter, a builder, a chef, a horticulturalist, a farmer, and a laundry assistant have in common?

The answer, in the context of careers at Corrections, is that they all could work as one of our industry instructors.

Our industry instructors play an important part in keeping our prisons running smoothly, while also teaching new skills to people in prison. Their role is to supervise activities relevant to their industry (eg meal preparation, grounds maintenance, etc) and assist offenders to gain skills and qualifications that will help prepare them for employment.

The work that instructors, and the men they manage, do not only help with the operation of the prison, but can also assist the community, through projects that offer men the opportunity to give back.

In this issue, we’re sharing two stories that provide a bit of insight into the diverse work that our instructors do –  a TVNZ story celebrating 150 homes being built through a partnership between Rolleston Prison and Kainga Ora, and a story from Gareth, a catering instructor in Invercargill.

Check them out at the links below.

Staff bring te reo Māori into their work in new ways for  Māori Language Moment

On September 14, Christchurch Women’s Prison joined the country in marking a historic moment, by calling a random muster in te reo Māori, the first time it has been done. The moment – 12pm on September 14 - represents when the Māori Language Petition was presented to Parliament in 1972, on the first Māori Language Day.
