2024 Stimulating Access to Research in Residency” (StARR) grant awardees
The J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program has named two first-year residents, Daniel Rzewnicki, MD, (mentor Siva Bhavani, MD) and Nancy Wareing, MD, (mentor Nadine Rouphael, MD), as well as one third-year resident, Anamaria Dragan, MD (mentor Rebecca Levit, MD), as the three 2024 recipients of the “Stimulating Access to Research in Residency” (StARR) grant. Emory was initially selected to receive the highly competitive StARR award in 2018. The initiative was created by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to address a nationwide shortage of physician scientists. Professor of Medicines, Igho Ofotokun, MD, and Nadine Rouphael, MD, (Infectious Diseases) serve as co-directors of the program.

SOM I3 (Imagine, Innovate, and Impact) Cores Awards
Deadline: Thursday, March 14 by 5 p.m.
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide funding support to utilize the existing services and technologies offered by the nineteen EICF cores to generate data for research projects. Shared Instrumentation Grant (SIG) Program (S10 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Deadline: Monday, June 3
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase or upgrade a single item of high-priced, specialized, commercially available instruments or integrated instrumentation system. High-End Instrumentation (HEI) Grant Program (S10 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Deadline: Monday, June 3
The purpose of this FOA is to encourage applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase or upgrade a single item of high-end, specialized, commercially available instruments or integrated systems. Mechanistic Investigations into ADRD Multiple Etiology Dementias (R01 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Deadlines: Tuesday, June 4 and Friday, October 4
The purpose of this FOA is to support investigations with a minimum of two Alzheimer’s Disease-Related Dementias (ADRD) co-pathologies (e.g., tau, alpha-synuclein, TDP-43, TMEM106B, vascular), with or without risk factors and co-morbidities, in the same model system to identify cellular and molecular mechanisms of how and when these multi-pathology interactions drive worsening ADRD pathophysiology and phenotypic outcomes, such as cognitive, behavioral, or functional impairment. Investigating Distinct and Overlapping Mechanisms in TDP-43 Proteinopathies, including in LATE, FTD & other ADRDs (R01 - Clinical Trial Not
Allowed)
Deadlines: Thursday, June 6 and Friday, October 4
The purpose of this FOA is to support studies establishing deeper mechanistic insights and causal cellular and molecular relationships between TDP-43 pathology and phenotypic outcomes.
Would you like assistance reviewing your grant proposal? DOM researchers can request grant writing and editing services from Janet Gross, PhD on projects including resubmissions, career development awards, and multicenter grants. These services are offered through a cost sharing effort between the department and the researcher’s division and must be approved by both.
Paulina Rebolledo Esteinou (Infectious Diseases) received funding from Mount Sinai/NIH for a project entitled, “Strategies and Treatments for Respiratory and Viral Emergencies (STRIVE) Trial.” Srihari Veeraraghavan (Pulmonary) received funding from Tvardi Therapeutics, Inc. for a project entitled, “A phase 2 multicenter,
randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy of TTI-101 in participants with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.” Michael Woodworth (Infectious Diseases) received funding from Duke/NIAID for a project entitled, “Antibacterial Resistance Leadership Group (ARLG).”
