Petra Hanke From the associationWomen4Paper set first goalAt the end of October, ZELLCHEMING hosted the second virtual Women4Paper meeting this year. More than 20 participants from German-speaking countries took part in the meeting, which Petra Hanke, ZELLCHEMING Managing Director, had prepared together with the Women4Paper Advisory Board. Topics on the agenda included communication and discussion of a mentoring program for and by women in the paper industry. Many participants had already gained experience with mentoring and reported on initiatives in the companies or at association level. At the next meeting, some reference programs will be presented, and further steps will be planned. The goal is to set up and officially launch the Women4Paper mentoring program until ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2022. In addition, the participants exchanged ideas on possible keynote topics for the Women4Paper event at ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2022. Here, a presentation of the different job profiles for women in the paper- and pulp-based industry, the exchange with female junior staff as well as the use of gender-appropriate language received high approval ratings. The final program is to be adopted by the end of January 2022. The next virtual Women4Paper meeting is scheduled for December 13. All interested women working in the paper and pulp-based industry are invited to attend. More than 30 commitments have already been received, and the invitation will be published on this channel in due course. If you would like more information about Women4Paper, please contact Cornelia Gembus. In memoriamDipl.-Ing. Ralf Weidenmüller was managing director of the ZELLCHEMING association from 1977 to 1999. From society & industryEssity Main-Kostheim launches green hydrogen pilot project for CO2-free tissue productionHygiene and health company Essity is launching a pilot project to run a paper machine CO2-free with green hydrogen in the company’s production facility in Mainz-Kostheim, Germany. For this purpose, natural gas is successively replaced by green hydrogen on the site’s largest paper machine during ongoing production. The project is the first of this magnitude in the paper industry. Essity’s investment in the pilot project amounts to EUR 4m. Essity is starting to use green hydrogen in its production processes. The Essity site in Mainz-Kostheim is testing to what extent green hydrogen can replace natural gas in the tissue production process without compromising on the high product quality. Following the necessary installations and the re-build of the paper machine, the company will gradually add green hydrogen to its energy supply. It is planned to run the drying hood of the paper machine on 100 percent green hydrogen by autumn 2022. "We will be the first in the world to use green hydrogen for tissue production. This is a clear commitment towards our ambitious climate agenda and a big step towards a decarbonized society. We are creating a sustainable process that is setting a new benchmark for the industry”, says Magnus Groth, President and CEO, Essity. The investment in the green hydrogen pilot project will contribute to Essity’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. New Cepi Chairman: Ilkka Hämälä, President and CEO of MetsäAs of January 2022, Ilkka Hämälä takes over from his predecessor Ignazio Capuano as Chairman of Cepi, the Confederation of European Paper Industries. His mandate will last for two years. Mr. Hämälä has since 2018 been the President and CEO of Metsä, a forest industry group originated in Finland and operating in about 30 countries. The Group's annual sales is roughly EUR 5.5 billion and it employs some 9,300 people worldwide. Metsä Group’s parent company is Metsäliitto Cooperative, which is owned by approximately 100,000 Finnish forest owners representing almost half of Finland's private forests, which are some of the largest in the European Union. The outgoing Chairman Mr. Capuano, CEO of the Italian Burgo Group, a strong supporter of the modernisation of the paper and pulp industry, oversaw during his tenure the alignment of the sector with the objectives of the EU Green Deal, now at the stage of a legislative proposal by the European Commission and the EU’s main instrument in reaching the Union’s climate objectives. He saw the Green Deal as an opportunity for an industry which everyday products are meant to offer sustainable options and alternatives to more carbon-intensive goods. Mr. Hämälä will be taking over in what is a challenging global economic and political environment. As the face of an industry which is often seen as a role model for its commitment to sustainability, he will continue the work of his predecessor, working hand-in-hand with EU Institutions in support of the European Green Deal, while ensuring that the industry remains competitive and that a safe regulatory environment enables the investments necessary for it to further transform, innovate and achieve its emission reductions targets, in line with the EU’s climate ambitions.
