Why South Dakota programs are discontinuing: MidAmerican Energy’s energy efficiency programs were no longer cost effective, meaning the benefits received from the programs were less than the costs to deliver the programs. Under the 2018-2022 South Dakota Plan, MidAmerican Energy programs are evaluated under the Total Resource Cost (TRC) test, rather than the societal test that was used in previous plans and is currently used in the Iowa 2019-2023 Plan. When using the TRC test, the programs were no longer cost effective. There is always an opportunity to have cost effective energy efficiency programs return to South Dakota customers. MidAmerican Energy will continue to investigate and evaluate emerging technologies for consideration for future energy efficiency programs. To review the customer communications, click here.
