Bishop's Homily for Palm Sunday

Procession from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, April 17, 2011 in Jerusalem. (Ryan Rodrick Beiler / Shutterstock.com)
[Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, Honolulu]
Many years ago, I went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. On the flight to Tel Aviv, there were many Jews who were also going there on pilgrimage, because it was the Feast of Booths, which is a harvest festival prescribed in the Hebrew Bible (or what we call the Old Testament). Just as we Catholics often go the Rome on pilgrimage, the Jews go to Jerusalem. While I was in Jerusalem, I was very surprised to see many Jews lined up on the Mount of Olives with palm branches in their hands. There they were forming a procession into the Old City of Jerusalem, going to the site where the Temple had been. I always thought this Palm Sunday procession we hear about in the Gospels was a novelty for the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, but I discovered that this was something the Jews had been doing for centuries. Jesus simply joined in the procession in a special way as he entered Jerusalem
for the feast of Passover, where he would accomplish his own Passover from death to life. Read more...

Daily Mass for the Cathedral Basilica
|
 |
| |
To: Parishioners of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace
Dear Friends,
Peace be with you!
As you know, we have been working on the restoration of our beautiful and historic Cathedral Basilica for many years. In the past, you have been patient with parts of the church being closed off and the disruption that comes from renovations. We have decided that it is time to finish the complete renovation of the Cathedral as soon as possible, but this time, we will need to close the Cathedral for at least a year or a year and a half. This will enable us to do the work completely, safely, and inexpensively rather than doing it in small parts over many more years. We plan to close the Cathedral on Easter Monday, April 21, immediately after the 6:30 a.m. Mass.
It is very important that the Cathedral community remain intact and cohesive during this time of construction, so we ask you to make some sacrifices to stay together during this time. Your presence as a cohesive community will be even important once the renovations are completed, and we welcome more pilgrims to this holy place, especially to pray in the presence of the relic of St. Damien and the body of St. Marianne Cope, which will be enshrined in a new Reliquary Chapel on the mauka side of the Cathedral. We thank you in advance for your patience and your willingness to sacrifice the comfort of your church home so that we can return it to you in all its magnificence.
Beginning on Saturday, April 26, 2025, Sunday Masses and the Saturday anticipated Mass will be held at the site of the former Cathedral Catholic Academy, 1728 Nu’uanu Avenue, Honolulu, 96817. The current tenants have graciously agreed to let the Cathedral community worship there in the auditorium on weekends.
The weekend Mass schedule is as follows:
Saturday, 5:00 p.m.; Sunday, 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 12:00 noon, and 5:00 p.m. (Note: There will be no 6:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, and the Sunday evening Mass will be at 5:00 p.m. rather than 6:00 p.m.) Limited parking is available on the site.
We are still working on a site for weekday Masses, but we are not able to give you that information at this time. We will provide it to you as soon as possible.
Although the Diocese of Honolulu is taking the lead in the renovations and the fundraising for it, we ask your prayers for the success of our fundraising efforts and the safety of the workers. Thank you for your understanding and your patience during this time of temporary separation from your beloved church home.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact the Cathedral Office at (808) 536-7036. May the Lord bless you always!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
+ Bishop Larry Silva

Love, Family, Community
By Jennifer Rector
Hawaii Catholic Herald
In the Diocese of Honolulu, 284 people are preparing their hearts to be welcomed into the Catholic Church this year during the Easter Vigil.
These catechumens come from a range of ages, places and backgrounds, knowing different languages and customs, and yet all have a common experience: They all had a personal encounter with the Lord that has changed the trajectory of their lives forever.
A love connection toward conversion
For Courtney Owen, one of the catechumens from St. John Apostle and Evangelist Church in Mililani, it was through her boyfriend, Lancen Crisostomo, where she came to fall in love with the Catholic faith. Read more...

Call for Solidarity at ‘Encuentro’ for Migrants
|
 |
|
(Chess Ocampo / Shutterstock.com)
From the Office for Social Ministry
“Migrations, more than ever before, will play a pivotal role in the future of our world. At present, however, migration is affected by the loss of that sense of responsibility for our brothers and sisters on which every civil society is based.” - Pope Francis, Fratelli tutti
In a time when migration continues to be too often misunderstood, the Catholic Church remains steadfast in her commitment to the dignity of every human being. This sense of solidarity was made visible at the end of March, when Catholic bishops and pastoral workers from Mexico, the United States and Canada gathered in El Paso at the Mexico-U.S. border for a moving “encuentro” meant to strengthen regional collaboration and pastoral care with vulnerable people on the move.
The “encuentro” opened with a Eucharist celebrated at Annunciation House (a trusted refuge for migrants) on the feast of Saint Archbishop Oscar Romero, the Salvadoran martyr who sacrificed his life in defense of the poor. Among those gathered was an inspiring young migrant from and survivor of the deadly Juarez immigration center fire in March 2023 which killed 40 young men. Wilson was among the few who made it out alive and now copes with debilitating injuries. Yet despite his past pain, he continues to pray for healing, hope and justice for all. Read more...

CRS Rice Bowl Story of Hope from Bangladesh

(Photo by Lauren Carroll for CRS)
Protecting Crops from Natural Disasters
Shahadat Hossain lives on Manpura Island in Bangladesh. He is a successful vegetable farmer who grows beans, pumpkins, tomatoes, eggplants and green chilis. He spends his day caring for his cows and tending the garden plots on his family’s land. Their farm provides nutritious food for Shahadat’s family to eat and extra produce he can sell at the market.
But a few years ago, Shahadat’s family struggled to pay for basic household expenses like food and school fees. His father worked as a motorbike driver but only earned a small income. His mother grew vegetables, but without much success. Their village, and much of Bangladesh, is located on flat lowlands. The intense rainy season causes flooding that often destroys farms and crops. Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “ʻOhana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “ʻOhana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

Saint of the Week
Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion
Solemnity - April 13
This day could be thought of as a day of contradiction. The Mass begins with the reading of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and His joyous reception by the crowds who strewed palm branches before Him, crying out, “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.” Today, this inspiring scene is commemorated by processions of the faithful carrying palm branches into their churches. The contradiction, however, is experienced as the full narrative of the Passion of Christ is read, culminating with Jesus’ death on the Cross. Read more...
