[St. Stephen Church, Honolulu (with Installation of Pastor); St. Michael Church, Waialua (Parish Feast Day)]
Professionalism is a wonderful thing, and we are grateful to all the professionals who serve our community. But sometimes professionalism prevents many people from using their talents and gifts to reach out to others in simple ways.
Yes, we need professional medical personnel to diagnose our illnesses and to prescribe a treatment regime that is likely to be successful. We need professional psychological or psychiatric help from time to time to sort out deep seated personal issues that lead to unhealthy outcomes. We need professional teachers who understand well the subject they are teaching, but who also have good classroom management skills. We even need professional ministers who are trained to guide a parish or a diocese with the Word of God and to help the Church grow in its mission. Read more...

Decree Concerning the 2024 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
|
|
| |
From Most Reverend Clarence (Larry) Silva
Bishop of Honolulu
General Decree Concerning the 2024 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
While this very important celebration is usually on December 8, since that is a Sunday of Advent this year, all the Masses for December 7/8 must be for the Second Sunday of Advent. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is transferred to Monday, December 9. Although the Paulist Press Ordo says it is not a day of obligation this year, in order to give due honor to our national patroness, and since the Diocese of Honolulu only observes this Solemnity and the Solemnity of Christmas as holy days of obligation, I hereby decree that the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is to be celebrated on Monday, December 9, 2024, as a HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION in the Diocese of Honolulu. Pastors are to schedule Masses so that all may observe this holy day of obligation and to publicize that it is a holy day of obligation well in advance of December 9. Any Vigil Mass celebrated
on Sunday, December 8 is to be a Mass for the Second Sunday of Advent, not for the Immaculate Conception.
This decree is to be promulgated as law through publication in the Hawaii Catholic Herald and in the diocesan eNews.
Given at the Office of the Bishop on September 26, 2024.

Sacred Hearts Academy marked 115 years of providing Catholic education this month with a weeklong celebration highlighted by an assembly and pep rally on Sept. 12.
The all-girls college preparatory school was founded by 11 Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary sisters, who in September 1909 opened a campus with 53 female students in Kaimuki. The Academy now educates students as young as 3 years old through 12th grade.
Founders’ Week events included games, a Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony, the blessing of alumnae faculty and staff, and a school spirit day. Read more...

Walking Together with Migrants and Refugees

From the Office for Social Ministry
“Open our eyes and our hearts so that every encounter with those in need becomes an encounter with Jesus, your Son and our Lord.” Pope Francis, World Day of Migrants and Refugees, September 29, 2024
One focus in the 2024 US elections is immigration’s impact on not only on border states but nationwide. Daily in the media there are multiple images of migrants and their families on the Mexico-US border, as well as in many of the major cities and rural areas. Bishop Mark J. Seitz of El Paso, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Migration, recently remarked that the Pope’s message for the 2024 World Day for Migrants and Refugees (WDMR) provides a special scriptural image of and perspective on migrants today. “Pope Francis calls for solidarity with migrants, reminding us that their journeys mirror the biblical Exodus, with God as their guide and companion. He emphasizes that every encounter with migrants is an encounter with Christ, urging us to respond with compassion, recognizing their struggles as a reflection of our shared journey toward the
Kingdom of Heaven.” Read more...

Submissions Sought for Book on Cathedral
|
|
|
By Easter Almuena
Special to the Herald
I invite everyone to recollect memories they have of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace for a book I am compiling celebrating the cathedral.
Were you married there or your children baptized there? Did you spend time in prayer there and found yourself closer to Jesus? Do you serve there as a minister or as a volunteer? Do you have a fond memory with friends or family coming together for Mass, and perhaps meeting other people whom you eventually became close to? What part of the Mass moved you?
It may even be something that made you laugh and brought joy to your life. Whatever that may be, as you recollect those times, pray to God and consider putting it into writing. Read more...
