DOM ANNOUNCEMENTS

Staff Fest 2024 & SOM Staff Appreciation Week Postponed

Each year, Emory celebrates and honors dedicated staff members during Staff Fest. This popular tradition was scheduled to take place on May 17 on the Quad. Unfortunately, this year’s Staff Fest celebration will be postponed. Emory is currently working with our vendors and campus partners to determine a new date and will share details as soon as they are available.

Additionally, the School of Medicine's annual Staff Appreciation Week will be postponed. Please stay tuned for new event dates and information. We look forward to celebrating our staff soon!

Dhaval Desai, MD, receives highest physician honor from
Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital

Please join us in congratulating DOM faculty member, Dhaval Desai, MD, (Hospital Medicine), and physician at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital, who was named one of two recipients of the E. Napier "Buck" Burson, Jr., MD, Physician Award of Distinction. The award is the highest honor for physician service at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital.

The Burson Award, named for the former chief of staff at Saint Joseph’s and a leader in the field of gastroenterology, is presented annually to doctors for their adherence to the Mercy philosophy and contribution to the Mercy mission in Atlanta, for their contribution to the quality of medicine practiced at Emory Saint Joseph’s and for their leadership role as a member of the medical staff.

(Pictured L to R: David Kooby (other Burson Awardee); Tom McGahan (Digestive Diseases faculty, CMO at ESJH); Dhaval Desai)

We are proud to announce that Valeria Cantos, MD, and Carlos Saldana, MD, faculty members in the Division of Infectious Diseases and members of the Center for AIDS Research at Emory University (Emory CFAR), have each been awarded highly competitive U01 grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Each grant provides $1.4 million over four years to advance sexual health initiatives prioritizing Hispanic and Latino populations in the Atlanta area.

Emory Medicine Magazine: Long COVID: ‘Will We Get Better?’

Long COVID is an unwelcome guest that may steal your energy, sleep, ability to work or take care of family responsibilities, sense of well-being — even your life. Emory Medicine magazine asked the following experts who specialize in long COVID to host a virtual Dinner with a Doctor with several panelists who have the condition.

    • Igho Ofotokun, MD, MSc, Grady Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Emory School of Medicine, fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and member of the National Academy of Medicine
    • Alex Truong, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, and one of the co-directors of Emory’s post-COVID clinic
    • Tiffany Walker, MD, Assistant Professor of General Internal Medicine at Emory and clinician at Grady’s long COVID clinic.

All three clinician-researchers are involved in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) study Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER), which is “aimed at understanding the long-term post-acute sequelae of COVID-19,” says Ofotokun, who leads the Atlanta hub of the NIH initiative and is the national chair of the RECOVER Adult Cohort Coordinating Committee.

Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine climbs for American Lung Association

On Saturday, April 20, the Fight for Air Climb - Atlanta held its 18th annual stair-climbing event at the Promenade Tower in Midtown Atlanta. Emory's Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine was well represented by current and former clinicians. Team Emory Iron Lungs came in third place for fundraising by bringing in $5,040 for the American Lung Association.

"This year, the Emory team climbed in memory and honor of our friend and colleague Dr. Gerald Staton. Jerry was an active member of the American Lung Association and a steadfast supporter of Fight for Air Climb - Atlanta since its inception 18 years ago until his unexpected passing in 2023, raising thousands of dollars. In memory of Jerry, the team at the American Lung Association established the Dr. Gerald Staton, Jr. Fundraising Award. Luis Aguilar, the highest fundraiser, won the inaugural prize this year. We hope to carry forward the positive influence Jerry left on the community with this award and hope to encourage an even bigger turnout in the future.”

—Srihari Veeraraghavan, MD, Professor (Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine)
