Dear members and colleagues

As another year draws to a close, we would like to thank you for your continued support and wish you a healthy, happy and successful 2022!

Wrapping up a busy and challenging 2021, we welcome the newly elected Executive Committee for 2021-2022.

With another virtual AGM due to COVID, the Executive Committee look forward to getting back to some in-person meetings and events in the New Year. In thanking all our Executive team for their support and work over the past year, particular thanks to those who have stepped down from the Executive – Courtney Robertson, Rebecca Haynes, Sarah Vo, Stephanie Lambert and Calla Chau. We are deeply appreciative and thank the Law Society of New South Wales for their ongoing support as our Principal Sponsor, the NSW Bar Association as a Main Sponsor, and the many firms and organisations that hosted events and webinars, or partnered with us in delivering projects, submissions and events during the past year, and the speakers that gave freely of their time. We’ll be launching 2022 with our signature biennial Celebrating Women in the Judiciary event, on Friday 11 February 2022 at the Union University & Schools Club Sydney beginning at 5.30pm. Our Patron, The Honourable Virginia Bell AC, will be our guest speaker.

Our 70th Anniversary Gala Dinner will be hosted on Friday 11 March 2022 at Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park from 7pm. Celebrate with our 2021 Award winners, sponsors and supporters, members and distinguished guests, including Her Excellency The Honourable Margaret Beazley AO QC, Governor of NSW, and our Patron, the Honourable Virginia Bell AC.

And please save the dates for a number of other events already in the planning as noted below.

Our office will be closed from 23 December 2021 to 14 January 2022. The Executive Committee will then meet in the new year for a Strategic Planning meeting focused on exploring ways to continue to bring value to you as the voice of women and the legal community in NSW. As always, please do not hesitate to get involved with us and any of our subcommittees. We are looking forward to a busy year of events and policy work and look forward to having you on board.

DESIGNING GENDER EQUALITY INTO THE FUTURE OF THE LEGAL PROFESSION

Project update on ARC Linkage (LP190100966)

This project investigates how women and men understand and experience the changing nature of work in the law. Using innovative and engaged research design, the project will generate new knowledge about the gendered dimensions of workplace change and workplace dynamics. The project is a collaboration with the University of Sydney, the Australian National University, the Law Society of New South Wales, and the Women Lawyers Association of New South Wales. LAW, WOMEN JUDGES AND THE GENDER ODER – BOOK LAUNCH

Lessons from the High Court of Australia

Dr Kcasey McLaughlin is an early career researcher and social commentator who probes the notion of gendered difference in Australian law. Kcasey crafted her PhD thesis, critically interrogating the impact of gender within the High Court of Australia. This book seeks to understand how women judges are situated as legal knowers on the High Court of Australia by asking whether a near-equal gender balance on the High Court has disrupted the Court’s historically masculinist gender regime. The  first chapter is available for free as a preview for those who might be interested.

Click here to visit the launch event details and discount code for 20% discount until 24 December 2021 to purchase the book.
