CAREER DEVELOPMENT CORNER

Insider Advice for New Faculty

Starting a new faculty position can be both exciting and challenging. The Office of Faculty Development has solicited advice from mid-career faculty, and as one experienced faculty member advises below.

"Get a mentor! Academic medicine can be a difficult maze to navigate, and it can feel like you're expected to just figure it out. Mentors can help you tackle that steep learning curve by sharing opportunities, resources, and the insights they've gained along their own journeys (including the wisdom gained through learning from their own mistakes). While some mentors may focus specifically on traditional goals like increasing your scholarship or pursuing academic promotion, many can help you with exploring medical education, growing as a leader, developing a comfortable work-life balance, or building a career that you find fulfilling, regardless of the path you choose.” —Annie Massart, MD

Promotion Resource Available

The DOM Office of Faculty Development now has a new resource available for faculty going through or planning on going through the promotion process. The new (OneNote) DOM Promotion Notebook includes document templates, information and guidance on where to place items in your packet, and general information about the road to promotion. View the Promotion Notebook here or click the button below.

A look back at this year's DOM Research Day

Last Thursday, the Department of Medicine held the 17th Annual Research Day, recently renamed the Annual Department of Medicine David S. Stephens Research Day, to acknowledge the service of our beloved immediate past chair of the Department, David Stephens, MD. The event, held in person at the Emory Student Center, welcomed approximately 400 researchers, faculty, staff, and trainees to celebrate the groundbreaking research across all ten of the department’s divisions.

We appreciate the Research and Faculty Development team's hard work planning this wonderful event. Thank you again to all our speakers, presenters, and attendees for your time and input, and congratulations again to the recipients of the 2024 awards!

Division of Digestive Diseases attends ACG 2024

From October 25–30, the American College of Gastroenterology hosted its Annual Scientific Meeting & Postgraduate Course in Philadelphia, PA. This event offers clinicians, academicians, researchers, trainees, advanced practice providers, and other professionals in the field access to experts for in-depth discussions on a broad range of cutting-edge topics in GI, hepatology, and endoscopy, along with the opportunity to network, share experiences, and see the latest advances in gastrointestinal technology and therapeutics.

Digestive Disease fellows, residents, and faculty were in attendance to present their research, participate in poster presentations, and network with GI professionals from around the world. Kudos to the team for representing the DOM and Emory!

Division of Renal Medicine well represented at Kidney Week 2024

Many of our faculty from the Division of Renal Medicine had an outstanding time at the 2024 American Society of Nephrology's Kidney Week in San Diego, CA. Kidney health professionals from across the globe come together for this annual meeting and scientific exposition to explore advances in treatment, research, and technology in the fight against kidney disease.

DOM highlights from the week include a division party, outstanding research posters, presentations and lectures from faculty and fellows, and opportunities to connect with alumni, friends, and collaborators!

  • AKI and Critical Care Clinical Practice session led by Michael Connor, MD, "Fluid tolerance and responsiveness in the critically ill in the ICU."
  • Special Session: "Supporting a Diverse Workforce in Nephrology" led by Jason Cobb, MD. This event focused on enhancing the presence and success of faculty and fellows underrepresented in Medicine.
  • Oral abstracts on Cystic kidney diseases with moderator Fred Rahbari, MD.
  • Diversity Luncheon led by Chair Jason Cobb, MD.
  • Janice Lea, MD, hosted a reception for Emory faculty and alumni, faculty, and fellow recruits.
  • Dr. Lea met with governmental representatives from Baxter on behalf of the American Association of Kidney Patients regarding the peritoneal dialysis (PD) fluid shortage and future plans to address the crisis.

  • ASN partnered with faculty from the Home Dialysis University to host a reception for renal fellows. Dr. Lea served as faculty moderator.

Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine fundraises for lung disease and cancer

On November 2, many of our Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine colleagues participated in the Lung Force Walk hosted by the American Lung Association. They exceeded their fundraising goal, raising over $1,000 to support those in need, raise awareness about lung cancer and lung disease, and promote research, outreach, and early detection initiatives.

The Emory team was the second largest raising company and eighth team. It was a rainy day, but they still had a great turnout with faculty and fellows participating along with members from other local pulmonary programs at WellStar and Northside.

Volunteer Opportunity:
Dekalb County School System Special Olympics

Dekalb County School System has a desperate need of physician, PA or PNP volunteers to help out with health screenings for students with intellectual disabilities so that these students can participate in Special Olympics.

The logistics for these screenings has already been set up but, at the last minute, a local residency program backed on their commitment to volunteer. So this is why there is a real need for medical providers to volunteer on these dates at such short notice. The kids will come with medical history forms filled out by their parents. Release of liability is provided by Georgia Law.

This is a great way to “give back” to the community! Without these exams, many kids will simply not be able to participate in Special Olympics at their school. It is so rewarding to know that these kids will have the opportunity to participate in Special Olympics!

Info about Health Screenings for Special Olympics:

  • Who: MD, PA, NP volunteers are needed (who have an active Georgia license).
  • When: November 13, 14, 15
  • Time: 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
  • Where: First Baptist Church of Tucker (2367 Main Street, Tucker, GA)
  • Bring: Stethoscope (they are providing otoscopes). Nurses will be doing vitals including blood pressure.

If you can volunteer on any of these dates, please reach out to Sally Wright, MD, (pediatrician and wife of David Wright, MD, Emory Emergency Medicine) via text 678-362-8505 or email sallyannwright1106@gmail.com.

DOM RYSE UPDATES

November is Native American Heritage Month

During the month of November, we celebrate Native American Heritage Month, honoring the diverse cultures of Indigenous people in the U.S. Locally, Emory recognizes the Muskogee (Creek) people who once lived on and nurtured the land where Emory’s Oxford and Atlanta campuses are now located.

Emory University Land Acknowledgment:
Emory University acknowledges the Muscogee (Creek) people who lived, worked, produced knowledge on, and nurtured the land where Emory’s Oxford and Atlanta campuses are now located. In 1821, fifteen years before Emory’s founding, the Muscogee were forced to relinquish this land. We recognize the sustained oppression, land dispossession, and involuntary removals of the Muscogee and Cherokee peoples from Georgia and the Southeast. Emory seeks to honor the Muscogee Nation and other Indigenous caretakers of this land by humbly seeking knowledge of their histories and committing to respectful stewardship of the land.

We encourage you to visit the Native American and Indigenous Engagement at Emory scholar blog for more information and resources. This serves as a hub for Native American, Indigenous, and allied students, faculty, staff, and alumni to share research, events, ideas, and resources with the Emory community and beyond.
