Grit, Growth & a Bronze to Show for It

Auckland’s Premier men’s and women’s teams stepped onto the big stage at the National Intercentre (12–15 March) and delivered a campaign full of promise, pride, and progression.

Both sides were outstanding through section play, going a perfect five-from-five to top their pools. The women produced impressive wins over strong opposition before a heart-stopping quarterfinal clash with Thames Valley, where a dramatic extra end brought their run to a close.

The men, meanwhile, powered through their quarterfinal with a commanding performance against North Harbour, earning a spot on Finals Day. Up against a quality Canterbury lineup, they battled hard but ultimately secured a well-earned bronze medal.

With a fresh mix of youth and experience, plus several debutants making their mark, the future looks bright for Auckland bowls.

Back-to-Back wins for Auckland 1-5 Reps

Auckland’s upcoming reps have gone back-to-back, claiming the 1–5 Octagonal title after a standout weekend of development and competition in the Bay of Plenty.

Hosted at Matua Bowling Club, the event brought together eight centres, giving emerging players a valuable taste of representative bowls in a multi-day format.

Men in the mix
The Auckland men rebounded from an opening round loss to stay in contention throughout a tightly fought competition. A strong final round win over Bay of Plenty secured third place - just one rink point off second in a remarkably close finish, with the top four teams locked on match points.

Women lead the charge
Auckland’s women were dominant, going unbeaten through day one and continuing their momentum into day two. Despite a final round loss to North Harbour, they topped the standings with a clear edge.

Champions again
With the women setting the standard and the men right in the fight, Auckland’s combined performance sealed consecutive titles, highlighting the strength of the region’s emerging talent.

Thanks to Bowls Bay of Plenty and Matua Bowling Club for delivering a fantastic event.

Record numbers set for Secondary School Pairs Day

Bowls Auckland’s Secondary School Pairs Day is shaping up to be bigger than ever, with record-breaking entries locked in for Tuesday 24 March 2026.

A total of 100 teams – that’s 200 rangatahi will take to the greens from 9.00am to 2.30pm, marking a 33% increase on last year and an incredible 400% growth over the past three years! The surge highlights the growing momentum behind bowls in secondary schools across the region.

To accommodate the demand, this year’s event will feature two grades. The Championship division will be hosted at Remuera, while Mt Eden will welcome players competing in the Development grade.

With so many schools now connected to local clubs, it’s a great opportunity for the bowls community to show their support. If your club has ties with a participating school, head along, cheer them on, and be part of a fantastic day for the next generation of bowlers.

Champions Crowned: What a Night at Balmoral

By Daniel Chivers

On Wednesday evening, the lights were bright - but the competition was even brighter at our Wednesday Social League Finals Night delivered across the board. From the high-stakes Kelly Cup clash to the ever-proud “Wooden Spoon” decider, the greens were absolutely humming.

A massive congratulations to our 2026 winners:
Division 1 (Kelly Cup): Terminators
Division 2 (HB Memorial): Cantabs

And a big nod to the Mudlarks, who secured promotion into Division, joining finalists Cantabs and MAD Buggers in next season’s top flight.

A huge shout-out to Andrew Lamont for running a seamless season, and to Penny for keeping everyone fuelled right through to finals night. We also couldn’t do it without the generous support of The Western Trust, those prizes were the perfect cherry on top for our winners.

The new drone shots from the evening shine a spotlight on Balmoral, buzzing and looking its vibrant best.

Whether it was a Speight’s jacket or a Pirie’s meat pack, there were plenty of smiles on the green. Be sure to check out the full gallery and results in the first edition of the Balmoral Bias.
