[St. Catherine Church, Kapaa (Confirmation & First Communion); St. Theresa Church, Kekaha (Confirmation & First Communion); Immaculate Conception Church, Lihue (Confirmation & First Communion)]
I suppose you are expecting me to preach today. But if I took one of our Confirmation candidates and said, “You are going to be preaching today,” you would probably be much more nervous than you are! You might panic and think, “What am I going to say? I’m just a student? I am going to preach to all these people?” (Although one or two of you might secretly love the opportunity!)
While it is true that I am going to preach at this particular Mass, it is also true that you are now going to be commissioned to preach the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ! Today you are given the same commission that was given to the original disciples of Jesus. You will preach the Gospel, maybe with words, but for sure by your living witness to Jesus and his love. Enthusiasm and joy radiated through St. John Apostle and Evangelist Church on May 17 as the Mililani parish’s native son, Taylor K. Mitchell, entered the final leg of his path toward priesthood.
Bishop Larry Silva ordained Mitchell to the transitional diaconate in the mid-morning Mass with nearly three dozen priests and deacons in attendance, as well as family, friends and other faithful.
In his homily, Bishop Silva recounted a conversation he had in 1991 with a seminarian at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. When then-Father Silva asked what attracted the seminarian to the priesthood, the young man’s response took him aback — “I’m in love with Jesus.” Read more...

Pope Leo XIV Calls for Compassionate Unity and Justice

From the Office for Social Ministry
“In this our time, we still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalizes the poorest. For our part, we want to be a small leaven of unity, communion and fraternity within the world.” - Pope Leo XIV, homily, May 18, 2025
In his first homily as Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV offered a heartfelt message about being a loving Church in missionary service and inclusive unity. Addressing more than 200,000 Jubilee year pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square, he reminded all that the Church should not be about power, but about walking in fraternal compassion with others, especially those who are suffering and vulnerable. In a recent letter to Congress, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) echoed Pope Leo XIV’s message by urging passage of a budget "that truly supports the flourishing of families, without harming the poorest and most vulnerable… including our immigrant brothers and sisters, and our environment.” The letter was signed by bishops elected to chair six of the most important committees in the USCCB. Talks for Youth and Adults, May and June
|
 |
| |
Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays during June
at 6:00 p.m.
St. Michael the Archangel Church, Kailua-Kona
All are welcome to join these talks on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6-7pm at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Kailua-Kona. These talks will be given by the missionary team of the Neocatechumenal Way in Hawai’i: Jonathan & Nazarena Stenger with their seven children, Fr. John Wadeson, Benjamin Paz a seminarian for the Diocese of Philadelphia, and Paulo Da Mata a seminarian for the Diocese of Brooklyn.
These talks are an announcement of the Good News where Christ has an answer to the difficult situations we experience and gives us the possibility of love and forgiveness. This itinerary of Catholic formation lived in small communities within the parish will help us to discover the richness of our baptism. The Catechism of the Catholic Church 1231 states that by its very nature infant baptism requires a post baptismal catechumenate. Not only is there a need for instruction after baptism but also for the necessary flowering of baptismal grace in personal growth.
For more information, please contact Jonathan and Nazarena Stenger at (808) 268-3993.

Saint of the Week
The Ascension of the Lord
Solemnity - June 1
The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord commemorates the fortieth day after the Resurrection when Jesus ascended body and soul into Heaven and took His seat at the right hand of His Father. Traditionally, the location of the Ascension is believed to be less than a mile east of the Old City of Jerusalem, and that spot is marked by the Chapel of the Ascension, which is said to contain a miraculous imprint of the footprints of Christ before He ascended.
