Early Registration for the APATX18 Conference Now Open

Early registration is now open for the APATX18 Annual Texas Chapter Planning Conference and Short Course for Elected and Appointed Officials. Join us in the Gulf Coast on October 17-19, 2018, at the Galveston Island Convention Center.  Texas' signature planning event will feature exciting sessions, mobile workshops, plenary and luncheon speakers, and networking events.  The Short Course offers training for Planning commissioners and elected officials. AICP members have the opportunity to receive up to 12.5 hours of Certification Maintenance credits during the conference. Early registration rates will end on August 17.

Call for 2018 Texas Planning Awards and Planning Excellence Recognition Is Open!

We are looking for Texas' best! The Call for the Annual Texas Chapter Awards Program  are open until July 13th and Planning Recognition Program applications are due TODAY! There have been some minor changes to the Texas Chapter Awards Program as the process has been moved completely online using ZoomGrants (same software for the Conference Sessions). Torres recognized for work on Community Rating System

From The Rockport Pilot

City of Rockport Community Planner Amanda Torres was presented the Spirit of Community Award for her outstanding work on the Community Rating System, which will lead to lower risk of flooding and reduced flood insurance premiums. She was also recognized for her mitigation planning, coastal resiliency efforts, climate awareness and other planning efforts.

Torres received the award at the Resilience and Climate Awareness Community of Planning Conference, held April 30 and May 1 in Port Aransas.

She was selected from a group of deserving outstanding planners because of her dedication and successful efforts. Candidates represented organizations from all Gulf states between Texas and Florida.

Elected and Appointed and Officials Planning Workshops - North and South Texas

The APATX Chapter and its sections help to provide basic training to elected and appointed officials all across Texas. Below are two dates for training in the North Texas and South Texas regions. Additional training will be scheduled this summer and fall in Tyler, El Paso, and Midland.

This year's event will take place at the DFW Airport Headquarters, located in the heart of the Metroplex.  Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in TWO SEPARATE, but related workshops.

Featured Planning Legend Video: David Pugh, FAICP

David Pugh, FAICP was employed professionally as an urban planner in Oklahoma, North Carolina, Missouri, Kansas, and Texas. In 1976 he was employed as an Assistant Professor in the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University. From 1981 to 1985 he served as the Head of the Department of Urban & Regional Planning. He developed an educational workshop for city planning and zoning commissioners. David taught it at over 100 Texas municipalities. He established the Texas Target Cities Program in which Texas A&M faculty and students created comprehensive urban plans for dozens of cities across Texas.

In 1999 he was awarded an Outstanding Teaching Award by the A&M Association of Former Students. In that same year he received the highest honor that an urban planner can achieve when he was made a Fellow in the first class of fellows by the American Institute of Certified Planners. He retired from Texas A&M in 2004, but continued to teach an occasional class in land use law. In 2015 he was the recipient of the “Legends of Texas” award given by the Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association.

David Pugh, FAICP passed away on December 26, 2017.
