Kia ora e hoa,

Charmaine’s journey at Ara Poutama Aotearoa started in 1997, when she was inspired to join the team as a Corrections Officer.

With uncles who worked as Corrections Officers, Charmaine was motivated to follow in their footsteps.

26 years later, she’s now leading the roll-out of a new service that aims to intervene early in the justice system – Bail Support Services. Having once been a whānau member of someone in the justice system, it’s a service that she’s deeply passionate about.

As part of Bail Support Services, Bail Support Officers work with people on remand and assist them with bail applications. They also connect people with support for unmet social needs once they’re on bail, to help prevent future offending.

Check out our feature story below, where we share Charmaine’s story and her passion for improving the justice system.

Ngā mihi,
