In Case You Missed It: New Faculty Orientation

DOM's Office of Faculty Development held its annual half-day New Faculty Orientation via Zoom on Thursday, September 19, welcoming a diverse group of approximately 30 new faculty members. The event featured opening remarks from the Chair, Carlos del Rio, MD, who emphasized the department’s commitment to excellence in patient care, research, and education.

An overview of faculty development initiatives and programs was presented by Sushma K. Cribbs, MD, MSc, Vice Chair, DOM Faculty Development, and Alia Kamel, Director, Faculty Development.

The session included information on mentorship opportunities, professional development workshops, and promotion. The Office of Faculty Development highlighted its commitment to supporting faculty growth and career advancement through these initiatives.

Additionally, the orientation included breakout sessions where new faculty members could engage in more focused discussions, covering topics on education, mentoring, research, RYSE DEI, information technology services, human resources, Emory FIRST, and research administrative services (RAS). Participants had the opportunity to ask questions, share their experiences, and network with colleagues.

Overall, the orientation fostered a sense of community and provided valuable information to help new faculty members succeed in their roles. Thank you to everyone who attended and to all of the Division Directors and presenters for making this a successful day for our new faculty!

DOM ANNOUNCEMENTS

Emory’s Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology’s groundbreaking collaboration with FAIR Health Inc.

Earlier this month, the national, independent nonprofit, FAIR Health, Inc., announced collaborations with clinical sites at four universities under a national initiative generously funded by The John A. Hartford Foundation (JAHF). Emory University’s Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology and Grady Memorial Hospital will be one of the four sites participating by using several of FAIR Health’s SDM tools for primary care and palliative care conditions, including hip osteoarthritis and type 2 diabetes, as well as dialysis and nutrition options for seriously ill patients.

Ugochi Ohuabunwa, MD, Chief of Geriatrics and Professor in the Department of Medicine shared, “We are delighted to be working with FAIR Health on this exciting initiative for older adult patients. Using these shared decision-making tools in the clinical setting will offer valuable insights on healthcare decision making and how we, as clinicians, can improve our approaches to healthcare engagement with older adults and their families in line with age-friendly care.”

Clinicians at each site are working with older patients and caregivers at the point of care with healthcare engagement and shared decision-making (SDM) tools provided by FAIR Health, available on FAIR Health for Older Adults (fairhealtholderadults.org). The onsite implementation effort complements FAIR Health’s national, multichannel Healthy Decisions for Healthy Aging campaign, which launched in January 2024. FAIR Health’s collaborations with these clinical sites mark a significant step forward in age-friendly care.

Dr. Carlos Saldana presents HIV research at the
White House's Adelante Summit

On September 24, Carlos Saldana, MD, (Infectious Diseases) was invited to speak as a panelist at the White House for their Adelante Summit. This event gathered leaders from diverse backgrounds to discuss policies around HIV care and prevention, specifically within the Latino community.

Carlos Saldana, MD, (Infectious Diseases) presented his work on engaging with Latino communities in Atlanta, where he conducted interviews with healthcare providers and community members to understand why HIV numbers were rising. Key insights revealed factors such as limited access to culturally and linguistically appropriate healthcare, stigma, and social barriers like immigration status and financial challenges. These findings helped shape a community-driven social media campaign linked to a peer navigation program to improve access to care. He also briefly discussed SALUD MOVIL, a U01-funded project that integrates bilingual telemedicine with mobile testing and phlebotomy, designed to meet the community where they are and overcome healthcare access barriers.

We are proud of Dr. Saldana for speaking on this critical issue and representing the DOM and Emory on a national stage! If you are interested in learning more about this topic, read the Georgia Department of Public Health's recent report below.

Reminder: Emory Logo Usage and Branding Guidelines

Did you know that the creation and governance of the use of Emory’s names, logos, and trademarks are the responsibility of the Office of University Communications and Marketing’s brand team?

In fact, all ten divisions within the DOM and many other DOM groups already have official Emory logos or what the brand team refers to as brand signatures. Logo guidelines are outlined in the Emory University identity standards and policies. These guidelines apply to all Emory departments, divisions, offices, centers, institutes, programs, initiatives, research projects, laboratories, etc.

If you are looking to differentiate your group, lab, or program, the DOM’s marketing and communications office can work with you to create unique visual messaging. Visual messaging is the imagery and design that presents the message to audiences about the entity’s resources and work. Messaging appears along with the official university, school, department, or division logo but may not replace it.

While we can work with you to create visual messaging for your group, we ask that you only use the official logo for our department or your division for external materials such as your email signature, letterhead, and social media accounts.

Please reach out to Sarah Jones with any questions.

Newsweek announced that AG Rhodes at Wesley Woods is ranked number one in the state for 2025, marking the fifth consecutive year at the top. Budd Terrace also earned a spot at #15.

This year's list recognizes 1,050 nursing homes across the 25 states with the highest number of facilities, according to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data. The top nursing homes in each state were assessed and ranked based on four pillars: performance data, recommendations of medical professionals, accreditations, and resident satisfaction.
