Provoked Vestibulodynia: "Pioneer" Study Examines Shock Wave Treatment
Women with provoked vestibulodynia (PVD) may benefit from low-intensity shock wave therapy (LISWT), experts say.
Their "pioneer" study was recently published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
Thirty-two women with PVD participated. Twenty-three women received 12 doses of LISWT over the course of 6 weeks. The remaining 9 women received a sham treatment of the same duration.
In assessments of pain and sexual function, women in the LISWT group had greater improvements than the women receiving the sham treatment. They also developed higher pain thresholds.
