Skills Report Highlights: What Businesses Need to Know

The Productivity Commission’s interim report on Building a Skilled and Adaptable Workforce has identified major trends shaping Australia’s jobs market:

  • 90% of new roles in the next decade will need tertiary qualifications

  • Workers are likely to change careers 2–3 times over 20 years

  • Faster, simpler recognition of prior learning is essential

  • SMEs will benefit from targeted training incentives

One standout example is the NSW Government’s Trade Pathways for Experienced Workers Program (p. 68), which helps partially skilled, mature-age, and career-changing workers gain formal qualifications through RPL and gap training.
