Lilly receives MHRA authorisation for tirzepatide in alternative Kwikpen® presentation for two indicators

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has granted marketing authorisation in the UK for tirzepatide solution for injection in an alternative KwikPen® presentation for two indications.

Eli Lilly and Company has announced that it has been authorised for the treatment of adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise:

  • as monotherapy when metformin is considered inappropriate due to intolerance or contraindications
  • in addition to other medicinal products for the treatment of diabetes.

Leicester researchers involved in an international study have seen an increase in the number of deaths that were not related to COVID-19 among people with diabetes during the pandemic.

Dr Patrick Highton and a group of experts have identified a higher prevalence of health complications and non-COVID-19-related deaths among those with diabetes who are female, younger, and from ethnic minority groups.

Under 40s with type 2 diabetes less likely to receive all health checks, audit finds

People living with type 2 diabetes under the age of 40 are less likely to receive all their healthcare checks compared to those who are older, according to the National Diabetes Audit. 

Between January 2021 and March 2022, more than 139,000 children, young people and adults under 40 had type 2 diabetes in England and Wales.
