FEAM Forum Annual Lecture 2024

This autumn, FEAM held its internal elections to appoint a new Board. We are delighted to announce that Prof. Ferry Breedveld has been elected as the new President of FEAM.
The new President outlined his priorities for the mandate, emphasising the importance of fostering collaboration, defining Europe’s health priorities, and addressing key challenges such as building healthcare resilience across the EU.
The new FEAM Board is composed of Prof. George Griffin as Secretary General, and the Vice Presidents Prof. Catherine Barthélémy (French Academy of Medicine), Prof. Luis Marti-Bonmati (Spanish Royal Academy of Medicine), Prof. Cédric Blanpain (Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine), and Prof. Ranieri Guerra (The Italian Academy of Medicine), who bring a wealth of experience and a shared commitment to advancing health research and policy in Europe.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our outgoing President, Prof. Stefan Constantinescu, for his outstanding leadership over the past three years. His guidance has been invaluable, and we are pleased to announce that he will continue to contribute to FEAM as our Past President.

FEAM partners with EASAC for “AI in Healthcare” project
FEAM and the European Academies’ Science Advisory Council (EASAC) are collaborating on a project to evaluate how AI-incorporated health products and services can be evaluated for adoption into healthcare use.
Key areas of exploration include evidence measurement, randomized clinical trials (RCTs), and health systems research, with use-cases illustrating the added value of AI.
The project will deliver a detailed report with actionable recommendations, along with articles in scientific and policy journals and a communications plan.

FEAM at the European Hospital Convention
On Friday 22 November, our newly appointed president, Prof. Ferry Breedveld, attended the CONVEHO European Hospital Convention in Amsterdam. This is a dynamic conference bringing together hospital managers from across Europe for a day of insightful exchanges and discussions.
Prof. Ferry Breedveld delivered an engaging presentation on drug availability in the EU, highlighting the challenges of shortages and sparking useful discussions about practical solutions.

FEAM President Discusses US Health Policy on Euronews
Prof. Ferry Breedveld, President of FEAM, was recently interviewed by Euronews about the potential global implications of changes in US health policy following the recent elections.
With President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to overhaul the CDC and FDA, Prof. Breedveld highlighted the importance of global collaboration in pandemic preparedness, stressing that the US plays a key role in shaping international health responses.

One Health Conference Romania
FEAM, in collaboration with the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences, has hosted an International Conference on One Health on 21–22 November in Bucharest, Romania.
Prof. George Griffin, Secretary General, and Dr. André Jestin, Advisor to the Board, attended in person, along with Prof. Jakob Zinsstag, from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, who presented the latest SAPEA report, “One Health Governance in the European Union.”

SAM publishes advice on One Health Governance in the EU
The Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) to the European Commission has published its latest advice on "One Health governance in the EU."
Coordinated by FEAM on behalf of SAPEA, this evidence review report aims to inform and guide the European Union on improving the governance of One Health—a concept that recognizes the interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health.

The French Academy of Pharmacy has published a statement titled "Vacant positions in the second year: it is imperative to evolve the entry requirements for pharmacy studies," and a report titled "The transformation of the community pharmacist profession: from dispenser of health products to provider of healthcare services."
The Spanish Royal Academy of Veterinarians has published its calendar of activities for December. They will organise 2 public sessions, “Extensive livestock farming and biodiversity. Agricultural and natural ecosystems” and “Spanish livestock farming in the face of the new universal and European principles of sustainability in the agricultural sector”.
Three outstanding researchers in neuroscience have been awarded the Robert Bing Prize by the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences: Alexander and Mackenzie W. Mathis from EPFL are being recognized together for their pioneering work bridging machine learning and behavioral neurobiological research. Susanne Wegener from USZ/UZH is honored for her translational research on the pathophysiology and treatment of stroke. The recording of the Academy of Medical Sciences & The Lancet International Health Lecture 2024, “Climate crisis, cities and health”, is now available to watch online. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Mark J Nieuwenhuijsen, a world-leading environmental, epidemiology and health impact expert from ISGlobal. It was followed by panel reflections from Dr Marina Romanello, the Lancet Countdown, Dr Maria Neira, WHO, and Prof. Niheer Dasandi, University of Birmingham.
On Thursday, 5 December the Israeli National Academy of Science in Medicine will host its first scientific conference titled “Clinician-Scientists: The Untold Stories”. The sessions will run from 12 noon until 2 PM (CET), including the keynote lecture by Dr. Qanta Ahmed, a session of the Israeli Young Academy of Science in Medicine, and the session "From data science to data medicine".
