Click here 21 May 2024 AGRS e-NewsMessage from the Deputy DeanWe are very excited that we will shortly conduct the first voluntary Oral Examination of a PhD thesis at the University of Adelaide. We have already had a few students opt in for an oral examination as part of their PhD examination and the first one will be conducted shortly. Up until now only joint award students have had the opportunity to complete an oral examination so we are keen for all University of Adelaide students to have that experience. If you started your PhD before July 2022, you can opt in when you complete the Notification of Intention to Submit form. Opting in gives you the benefit of experiencing an oral examination which is standard across the world, including the opportunity to discuss your research with your examiners who are the leading experts in your field and will provide a finishing point and celebration of the end of your PhD. All students who started their PhDs from July 2022 will need to complete an oral examination. The AGRS has developed an Oral Examination webpage with much useful information regarding how an oral examination will work along with lots of FAQs and a link to a CaRST course where you can find out many more helpful tips and ideas. Best Wishes, Chris Associate Professor Christopher Ford, Deputy Dean of Graduate Studies| Adelaide Graduate Research School Tip of the Month Keeping track of supervisor meetings When did you last meet with your supervisor, and what were the agreed actions? Can you remember the specifics of why you and your supervisor agreed on a particular research methodology six months ago? Hopefully you can answer these questions easily by checking the minutes of your meetings! Best practice is for HDR students to set the agenda and take minutes at each meeting with their supervisor(s), and save these documents safely where both parties can access them – for example on Box. This doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming, and is helpful in ensuring everyone is clear on what decisions and actions have been agreed to. If you don’t already have agenda and minutes templates set up, ThinkWell have free templates available on their website: ThinkWell PhD Toolkit Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competitionCan you showcase your research project in just three minutes, using a single PowerPoint slide?
