DOM ANNOUNCEMENTSCarlos del Rio, MD, receives Emory Medal Congratulations to incoming DOM chair, Carlos del Rio, MD, FIDSA, (Infectious Diseases) for being awarded Emory's most prestigious alumni award, the Emory Medal! This award honors recipients who are leaders in their field as well as leaders in their local, national, and global communities. As a renowned clinician, epidemiologist, and leader in infectious disease research, this is a well-deserved honor! 48 DOM Faculty Members Recognized for In recognition of Doctors’ Day, which is celebrated annually on March 30, the Emory School of Medicine Recognitions Committee sent out a call for nominations for doctors across the School of Medicine who go above and beyond. More than 200 Emory faculty members were nominated by their peers and colleagues for their dedication to improving the health and well-being of our patients and community through the care they provide, the research they conduct, and their efforts to teach and inspire learners. The committee reviewed each nomination and selected those who exemplify the outstanding faculty of the Emory School of Medicine. We’d like to send a special recognition to the 48 Department of Medicine faculty members who were recognized for going above and beyond. We are so proud! DOM Honors & Recognitions Louise Hecker, PhD, (Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine) was the 2024 EmpowHER Award recipient at Emory’s Office of Technology Transfer Annual Celebration of Technology and Innovation. Hecker is a prominent researcher in the field of regenerative biology and specializes in pulmonology. Her research primarily focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying lung fibrosis and developing novel therapeutic approaches for treating this debilitating disease. Mark Spencer, MD, (General Internal Medicine) was selected to participate in the Society of General Internal Medicine's (SGIM) Leadership in Health Policy Program (LEAHP) Program. Participants in this program play an active role in forwarding the SGIM’s policy goals and enhancing its impact on national health policy. LEAHP participants will be at the forefront of shaping SGIM's health policy endeavors and expanding its national reach. Save the Date: Annual Bettye Rose Connell Memorial LectureBettye Rose Connell Memorial Lecture Series Established in 2009, the Bettye Rose Connell Memorial Lecture series commemorates Dr. Connell’s dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable elders. Each spring, distinguished regional and national researchers are invited to Emory University and the Atlanta VA Medical Center to honor her legacy and promote continued scholarship in this field. This year's speaker will be Steven L. Wolf, PhD, PT, FAPTA, FAHA, (Professor, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine; Director, Program in Restorative Neurology (PROREN), Emory University School of Medicine) who will be presenting, "Painting a Bett-r Rose-y Picture: Don’t “fall” for substitutes: “Know” your surroundings!" SOM Diversity and Inclusion Week: May 20-24, 2024 Registration for Emory School of Medicine's Diversity and Inclusion Week is now open. This year’s theme, From Being to Belonging, seeks to advance the results from last year’s Diversity Engagement Survey (DES), which showed an increased demand for a better sense of belonging among our School of Medicine community. Join the SOM for engaging lectures that showcase the incredible DEI work our remarkable community does year-round, cultural activities, an art gallery, a SOM Block Party and much more. Kokko Lecture in Nephrology Join the DOM's Division of Renal Medicine for 2024 Juha P. Kokko Lecture in Nephrology on Tuesday, May 21 from 5–7 p.m. (5 p.m. Lecture, 6 p.m. Reception) at the Emory University Student Center, Multi-Purpose Room 1, 605 Asbury Cir, Atlanta, GA 30322. This year's Kokko lecture, “Universal Donor Kidney”, will be given by William H. Fissell, MD, Associate Faculty of Nephrology and Hypertension, Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Call for Applications: Pre and Postdoctoral Training Slots ATLANTIS is a U2C/TL1 training program that provides funds for trainee costs plus access to valuable professional development programming and active networking opportunities. Join a vibrant group of scientists tackling research problems related and relevant to the disciplines of kidney, urology, or hematology. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, subject to the availability of positions. In order for applicants to be considered for our next review cycle, applications must be submitted on or before Wednesday, May 1, 2024. MEDICINE GRAND ROUNDSTomorrow's DOM Medicine Grand Rounds is canceled #MedicineGrandRounds Medicine Grand Rounds will resume on April 9, with Kierstin Cates Kennedy, MD, MSHA FACP SFHM, Chief Medical Officer at the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital, UAB Medicine, with a talk entitled "Demystifying Leadership: Dismantling what we traditionally believe about leadership". Mark your calendars! All upcoming sessions will be hosted on Zoom, and recordings will be available on the DOM YouTube channel for CME credits. NEW procedure for claiming MGR CME creditsThe process of receiving Medicine Grand Rounds CME has recently changed. CME credit will no longer be assigned by completing the survey. As of Tuesday, March 5, 2024, Medicine Grand Rounds, the Department of Medicine will use Emory's CME Tracker for CME credits. Please note, that claiming your CME credit is TIME SENSITIVE. You must text within seven business days of the CME presentation. Have questions or need assistance?
