UF School of PA Studies graduates 57 in annual commencement ceremony

On June 19, 57 members of the UF School of Physician Assistant Studies class of 2021 crossed the stage of the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, transitioning from students to alumni.

“When you reflect on your time here, I hope you will remember this day — the energy of being surrounded by your loved ones, the joy of celebrating your classmates, the pride of achieving your goal and the promise of what your future holds,” Colleen G. Koch, M.D., M.S., M.B.A., dean of the UF College of Medicine, told the graduates.

Welcome new residents

Thursday, July 1, marked the first official day of residency for recently graduated physicians across the country. UF Health in Gainesville welcomed more than 200 new residents to the College of Medicine's graduate medical education programs.

“The size of UF Health can be overwhelming, but soon you realize the atmosphere here is like a close-knit family,” said Stacia Andrews, M.D., who began her first year of residency with the department of anesthesiology.

Dr. Lampotang receives Gravenstein award for anesthesiology

Samsun Lampotang, Ph.D., director of the Center for Simulation, Safety and Advanced Learning Technology, has been honored with the J.S. Gravenstein award from the Society for Technology in Anesthesia in recognition of his lifetime achievements in technology in anesthesia.

The award — and the professorship held by Lampotang — is named for the founder of UF's department of anesthesiology, who was a driving force in advancing anesthesia technology, patient simulation and anesthesia patient safety.

CTSI director's research on brain cancer in children garners renewed philanthropic support

UF Health physician-scientist Dr. Duane Mitchell's research on pediatric brain cancer has garnered renewed support from the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The additional support was announced during the 16th annual Dick Vitale Gala, where UF head football coach Dan Mulllen and his wife, Megan, were also recognized.

Ideas emerge from focus groups during Phase 2 of strategic planning

“The collaboration between Dean Koch's office and the APP focus group brought forth excellent ideas on how to progress advanced practice providers as leaders in the institution and in the College of Medicine,” said Brittany Venegas, PA-C, MPAS, a physician assistant in surgical critical care at UF Health.
