Congressional Pressures Increase Around Research Security

In November, two separate congressional committees sent a letter to the National Science Foundation (NSF) asking about how American research is being protected from malign foreign governments. These letters represent an increasing bipartisan awareness of how other countries are continually exploiting our open system of research for economic and military gain.

Federal grant-making agencies are reminding grantees that all proposed engagements with foreign entities should be reciprocal, transparent, and aligned with academically based research terms and conditions that promote broad publication.

For more details and resources, see the Managing International Research and Engagement website or the Office of Research Security and Trade Compliance website.

Changes to Radiation Safety Leadership

We would like to thank Dr. N. Scott Mason from the Department of Radiology for his service as the Chair of the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC). We also commend him for his many years of service and participation as the Chair of the Radioactive Drug Research Committee (RDRC) and Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Research Use of Radioisotopes and X-ray Producing Equipment (HUSC).

Effective January 1, 2024, Dr. Margarita Zuley, Professor  of Radiology, will replace Dr. Mason as Chair of the RSC.  Dr. M. Saiful Huq, Profesor of Radiation Oncology, will replace Dr. Zuley as the Vice Chair.

Dr. Judith Joyce from Nuclear Medicine will replace Dr. Mason as Chair of the RDRC and HUSC in early 2024.

Report Licensed Intellectual Property Proceeds in MyDisclosures

If you receive royalties, milestone payments or other proceeds from intellectual property, you must report those payments on your Certification in MyDisclosures.  This includes payments you receive directly from the company and payments made to you through Pitt or UPMC associated with licensed University intellectual property.

For inventors of University intellectual property that is licensed to two or more companies, payments from the individual companies are typically combined. However, if you received more than $5,000 from a single company during fiscal year 2023, you recently received a letter from the Innovation Institute that included this information. Please report these payments in MyDisclosures.

Additional guidance about what to include on your Certification is available here. Detailed instructions on how to complete a Certification are available here.

ORP Onboarding Success

Over the past year, ORP provided a customized onboarding process for more than 70 new faculty members, connecting them with relevant ORP representatives (such as from the IRB or IACUC).

These onboarding sessions provide individualized assistance in protocol writing and regulatory compliance, while also establishing a point-of-contact that is helpful in addressing questions in the future. New investigators have indicated that such initial, personalized meetings are highly useful.

If you are interested in our onboarding services, please complete this short survey so we can determine your needs.
