Using public WiFi in cafes, hotels and coffee shops is something we all do. It’s convenient and gives you the benefits of working online wherever you happen to be. But are you aware of the data security issues of working from a public network?

In an age where remote and hybrid working are now the norm for so many employees and self-employed people, it’s important to know the key ways to keep your data safe. Read More....
In the next Bulletin we will look at how associations can better secure their data.

need to change the way they interact with current members and innovate to attract new members to meet the ever changing expectations.

Released recently by Governance Institute of Australia and Watermark Search International, the 2022 Board Diversity Index is a comprehensive investigation of the ASX 300 examining five types of diversity: gender, cultural background, skills/experience, age, and tenure & independence.

The eighth in the series, this year’s Index found:
  • While more women are moving into director roles (667 in 2022 compared to 633 last year), just 19% of female directors hold 48% of female-occupied seats, reversing the gains of last year when 29% of women directors held about 51% of female-occupied board seats.
  • Cultural diversity is stagnating: 90% of directors are from Anglo-Celtic backgrounds (same as last year).
  •  Directors are getting older: The number of those over 70 years has increased from 16% to 22%.
  • There is a higher proportion of women directors with additional qualifications: PhDs, governance qualifications and master's degrees in particular.
  • Tenure is changing: This year for the first time there are female directors with 15+ years tenure.

On 11 May 2021, as part of the 2021–22 federal Budget, the Australian Government announced reforms to the administration of not-for-profit (NFP) entities that self-assess as income tax exempt.

From the 1 July 2023, not-for-profits with an active Australian business number will be required to lodge an annual self review return in order to access an income tax exemption.  In subsequent years, NFPs will confirm or amend information provided to them on a pre-filled self-review return. If a return is not lodged, they may become ineligible for an income tax exemption and penalties may apply under the ATO’s penalty framework.

Your organisation can be reviewed by the ATO, and if the ATO does not agree with your assessment, you may need to pay back tax for the period that you wrongly self-assessed. Interest and penalties may also apply. If you are uncertain about the status of your organisation, you can seek a private binding ruling from the ATO on your organisation’s tax exempt status.
Late last year, changes were made to the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission Regulation 2013 (ACNC Regulations). These changes will take effect from the 2022 Annual Information Statement (AIS) reporting period. For the majority of entities, this will be for financial reporting periods ending 30 June 2022.
