You may be aware that every new bishop has to choose a motto that will mark his ministry as a bishop. I chose “Witness to Jesus” as my motto. It is from the Book of Revelation, Chapter 19. Why did I choose it? Because I know the Catholic Church is known for many things: parishes, schools, hospitals and social service organizations; doctrines and moral teachings; a complex hierarchy including the Pope, Cardinals, bishops and archbishops, priests, deacons, etc. It has many programs: youth ministry, ministry to the sick, grief ministry, outreach to the poor, prison ministry and many others. It has many rituals. And because of all these things – which are all important – it is sometimes easy for us to forget that all of this exists because God loves us so much that he sent us his only Son, Jesus, to live among us, to give his life for us, and to conquer our greatest enemy, death, in his resurrection. When all is said and done, if we forget about Jesus, all of these other things become much less important or even meaningless for some. Read more...

Catholic Charities Housing Development Corp planning affordable senior housing next to downtown cathedral

By Anna Weaver
Hawaii Catholic Herald

Plans are in place for a new affordable housing development for seniors next to the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in downtown Honolulu.

The 17-story building, called Hale Kamiano, will have 67 total units and is a collaboration between the Diocese of Honolulu and Catholic Charities Hawaii’s Housing Development Corporation.

CCHDC is taking the lead on the project and working with Avalon as a development consultant, which will not only offer affordable senior citizen apartments but also have the second and third floors for the Diocese of Honolulu’s offices currently located at the nearby 1184 Bishop Street chancery building. Relic of St. Junipero Serra to Bless Diocesan July Vocation Holy Hour

The diocese’s monthly Holy Hour for Vocations at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa on July 5 will be a very special one with the presence of a first-class relic of America’s newest saint — Junipero Serra.

The event will recognize the saint’s July 1 feast day and the work of Serra International, an organization named after the Franciscan saint that has worked for decades to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Attendees will receive a holy card to touch the relic to create a personal third-class relic.

Event organizer Chuck Furr, a parishioner of St. Anthony, Kailua, hopes this special evening will highlight the fact that “we are all responsible to support the call of vocations.” Read more...

From the Office for Social Ministry

Good health and nutrition are a part of “wellness” social ministries. Saying we want to be in good physical condition and making action steps to do that are two different things. Currently this  program is available in Hawaii on Oahu and the Big Island.

Saint of the Week

Saint Irenaeus
c. 135–c. 202
Memorial – June 28

After Pentecost, the Apostles preached the Gospel and established the Church in numerous cities. Saint John the Apostle is believed to have preached in Ephesus, modern-day Turkey. It was there that Saint Polycarp learned from him about Christ, was ordained a bishop, and was sent to the town of Smyrna, just fifty miles north, to govern the Church for approximately sixty-five years. In Smyrna, a young man named Irenaeus, raised in a Christian family, became Polycarp’s disciple, learning more about the faith from this disciple of the Apostle John. After his ordination as a priest, Irenaeus ministered in modern-day Lyon, France, under Bishop Pothinus. Read more...
