SFO is the First US Airport Approved to Use FEMA’s Public Alert SystemWireless Emergency Alert system can get life-saving information to any cellphone at the Airport SFO has become the first airport in the United States to receive approval from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to issue Wireless Emergency Alerts, which can issue potentially life-saving information to any cellphone located on Airport grounds. This industry-leading capability allows the Airport to issue the emergency alerts through the Integrated Public Alert Warning System (IPAWS), a unified platform that integrates multiple alert systems across the nation. With Wireless Emergency Alerts issued through IPAWS, SFO staff can quickly reach airport employees, passengers, and members of the public on Airport grounds to provide critical information in an emergency. “Safety and security are our highest priorities, and we continue to enhance our emergency response capabilities,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “Being the first airport in the U.S. approved to issue Wireless Emergency Alerts gives us an important tool to help keep people safe during an emergency.” With Wireless Emergency Alerts, warnings can be sent to a mobile device without the need to download an app or subscribe to a service. Designated SFO staff have been trained and certified to issue Wireless Emergency Alert information using IPAWS. In the event of an incident, emergency, or situation which requires critical and potentially life-saving information to be disseminated immediately to Airport employees, passengers, and the public at SFO, designated staff will use the system to send a text message, accompanied by an audible alert, to mobile phones in the prescribed area who have enabled “Emergency Alerts” under the “Government Alerts” section of their phone settings.

SFO Completes Annual Emergency Exercise
Simulated terror attack tests emergency response, coordination between agencies SFO completed its annual emergency exercise on October 4, 2017, simulating a terrorist attack in Terminal 1 that tested emergency procedures for communication, incident command, and coordination between multiple agencies. Although federal regulations require U.S. airports to conduct such a drill every three years, SFO conducts this full-scale emergency drill annually to ensure the highest level of readiness. “Our highest priorities are safety and security, and our annual emergency exercise ensures that we continually improve our emergency response capabilities,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “With the participation of so many organizations and agencies, this exercise exemplifies the teamwork within our SFO airport community.” The exercise demonstrated the effective coordination of various agencies, including Airport staff, the San Francisco Fire Department Airport Division, the San Francisco Police Department Airport Bureau, mutual aid units from around the Bay Area, and various state and federal agencies. Over 60 volunteers, complete with make-up, participated as role-play passengers. The exercise also demonstrated the capabilities of the SFO Emergency Operations Center (EOC), which serves as the focal point of the Airport’s efforts to restore normal operations following an event. The facility has been used extensively since its opening in 2000.

Aviation Evolutions: The Jim Lund 1:72 Scale Model Airplane CollectionJim Lund, a Bay Area native, has a passionate interest in aviation dating back to his childhood when he first constructed aircraft models. Later in life, he returned to the practice and has dedicated much of his time to model building as a way to explore and experience the astonishingly rapid advancement of aviation since the first airplane. With a keen eye for detail, Lund’s research includes careful study of the photographic record to assure that his models are accurately portrayed. Numerous models were constructed or modified from kits produced by manufacturers worldwide. In the many instances when no kit was available, Lund crafted the model parts from scratch based on manufacturers’ plans using the “vacuform” process—a method that creates plastic parts from his hand-carved wood forms. The 1:72 scale, with one inch equal to six feet, originated in the 1930s with popular aircraft model makers such as Skybirds and Frog. It appeals to the aircraft modeling community because of the ease with which nearly all aircraft types, from the smallest to the largest, can be constructed and displayed. This constant provides one-to-one size comparisons, and in large groupings it dramatically reveals the progress of aircraft design. Lund has created nearly 1,600 models in 1:72 scale representing historically significant aircraft from the 1903 Wright Flyer to today’s airliners. They are constructed using plastic, wood, metal, wire, string, and epoxy, and detailed with paint and decals. This exhibition presents nearly three hundred models of pioneer, sport, and commercial aircraft that Jim Lund generously donated to the SFO Museum aviation collection. Aviation Evolutions: The Jim Lund 1:72 Scale Model Airplane Collection is on view in the Aviation Museum and Library through May 13, 2018. The Museum is located pre-security in the International Terminal and is open daily from 10:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., free of charge.
SFO Recognized as National Innovator in Use of AnalyticsAirport named one of the Analytics 50 winners for in-house development of mobile app for taxis SFO has been recognized as a top innovator in the use of analytics by Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business and Information Management. In their annual Analytics 50 ranking, SFO was honored for the use of analytics to power TaxiQ, a mobile app developed in-house for use by authorized taxi operators at the Airport. “Our goal is to drive innovation in our industry, harnessing in-house expertise and next-gen analytics to solve airport business needs,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “We are proud to be recognized by Drexel University and Information Management for our efforts.” The TaxiQ app determines when a driver has accepted a “short” fare, involving transport to the cities immediately surrounding SFO, and provides head-of-line privileges when the driver returns to the Airport. The previous time-based system required taxi drivers to return to SFO within 30 minutes to qualify for any privileges. Using a Global Positioning System (GPS) geo-fence, the TaxiQ app allows drivers up to two hours to return as long as they stay within the defined short-trip region. The app also provides drivers with airline flight arrival and departure information, along with real-time information about space availability in the designated taxi holding lot. The Analytics 50 listing represents the second award for the TaxiQ mobile application. In September 2017, the app was honored with a “Best of California” award by the Center for Digital Government, which recognizes public-sector employees and local government organizations for their contribution to information technology issues in the State of California. TaxiQ is also the second mobile application developed in-house by SFO for ground transportation tracking. In 2015, the Airport launched an Application-Based Commercial Transport (ABCT) System, which tracks app-enabled Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) operating at the Airport boundaries, such as Lyft, Uber, and Wingz. The Drexel LeBow Analytics 50 is a national recognition of industry analytics innovators - an annual initiative honoring 50 companies using analytics to solve business challenges. Honorees were selected by a panel of researchers and practitioners who judged nominations based on the complexity of the business challenges they faced, the analytics solutions implemented, and the solutions’ business impact on the organization. This year’s winners will convene in Philadelphia on November 2, 2017 for an awards ceremony on Drexel University’s campus.
