It was a successful event and it was a pleasure to finally see many from the industry in person again and to have time for networking. The ZELLCHEMING association also took advantage of the occasion, and on the evening before, a "ZELLCHEMING Meet & Greet" was held in the Salon Elbterrasse of the Bilderberg Bellevue Hotel on October 21, 2021 from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm. The next event is coming up. We cordially invite you to the joint regional group meeting of VPM and the ZELLCHEMING association on Friday, November 12, 2021. The presentations this year will be on the topic of "Safeguarding the next generation in the paper and board industry / Quo Vadis 2040". The meeting will be held online via Microsoft Teams and is open to all members, no registration is required. The invitation letter, the agenda and the MS Teams link are available for download as PDF files in our event calendar. We are hoping for a large participation, best regards and stay healthy! Petra Hanke ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2022: Flyer with all important exhibitor information available now!We are all looking forward to the upcoming ZELLCHEMING-Expo with confidence and full of anticipation! That is why we have initiated the planning phase directly after the Virtual Days 2021 and now, as a first concrete step, nine months before the Expo 2022 (June 29 to July 1, RMCC/RheinMain CongressCenter Wiesbaden), we have prepared all the information exhibitors need in a compact brochure. The documents can be downloaded here. From society & industryThe situation on the paper markets is escalatingThe fact that paper has become a scarce commodity has long since been discussed in national general-interest newspapers and magazines, which have not only addressed the problem in editorial articles, but in some cases have already reacted to the changed situation with fewer pages themselves. At the Frankfurt Book Fair, which has just ended, the question of whether the bestseller would be available as a print edition at Christmas was also on everyone's lips. The Bundesverband Druck und Medien e. V. (bvdm) is also very concerned about the implications for print shops and print products in view of the situation regarding paper prices and delivery conditions. "I can only appeal to the companies in the paper wholesale trade and the paper industry to answer the many unanswered questions in discussions with customers, but also between our associations. This can take emotion out of the debate. It is not enough just to say that nothing has changed in the situation for weeks. Far too many oddities have been added for that. Anyone who wants to counter conspiracy theories and suspicions must have a conversation," demands Dr. Paul Albert Deimel, General Manager of the bvdm. It is irritating when numerous trading and production companies announce price increases by the same amount per ton on the same date with almost identical letters, the association says in a press release. Good, forward-looking planning becomes essentialThe cartonboard and folding carton market is currently characterized by a very tense situation. Delivery times for cartonboard and folding cartons have recently extended to an unprecedented extent. Similarly, the price structure has moved markedly upwards. According to industry experts, there are several reasons why the otherwise stable supply chain for cartonboard packaging for consumer goods is currently suffering from fluctuations. On the one hand, the internal demand for virgin fiber based cartonboard in Asia and North America as well as the disruptions in international logistics, respectively the exorbitantly increased freight costs in global goods traffic are responsible for the fact that the European converter market was missing an estimated 300,000 tons of virgin fiber based cartonboard, according to the FFI (Fachverband Faltschachtel-Industrie, Germany). These could not be compensated for in the short term. On the other hand, on the recycled paper side, a pandemic-related lower volume of recovered paper met with increased demand for many types of recovered paper-based packaging. With the recovery of the European economy at the beginning of the second quarter, ordering patterns picked up, especially in markets affected by Covid, such as food service, premium drinks, and cosmetics, complementing an already stable to increasing demand in many food segments due to the temporary food service lockdown. As a result, folding carton production for numerous customer segments is running at high capacity, and supply chains are filling up to the point of building up safety stocks. For the latter, security of supply of packaging materials and packaging supplies is seen as the dominant driver. In the current situation, Andreas Helbig, Spokesman of the FFI Board and Managing Director of SEDA Germany GmbH, therefore considers realistic forecasts by customers to be of great importance: "In the current market situation, good, forward-looking planning is essential. Panic and safety buying lead to additional shortages and are counterproductive. Customers are therefore well advised to plan with sufficient lead time, especially for new projects, to avoid new distortions." From the membershipValmet’s new pilot facility in operation at Fiber Technology Center in SundsvallValmet’s new pilot facility in operation at Fiber Technology Center in Sundsvall The purpose of the pilot facility investment is to strengthen the ZELLCHEMING member company’s research and development capabilities within the field of biomass pre-treatment and to respond to new market demands for bioenergy, biofuels, and biochemicals. The pilot facility offers piloting and laboratory services for customers and provides the opportunity to test different feedstocks and develop, verify, and optimize the pre-treatment process for specific purposes. The pilot facility’s pre-treatment system is flexible and can process many different raw materials. It is designed to enable several different process configurations, such as acid impregnation, and several different reactor configurations including vertical and horizontal reactor system. The process control is safeguarded by Valmet DNA system. “This investment is an important step forward for us as an innovative company and becoming a world leader in technology in the biorefinery area,” says Olof Melander, Senior Manager, Valmet Fiber Technology Center. We are happy to welcome new members again this month! We would like to know what motivated industry representatives to decide to become active members of the association. Andreas Scherer, head of occupational safety at Neenah Gessner in Bruckmühl, explained that for him the networking within the industry and the exchange on technical topics, especially in the areas of health & safety, were the deciding factors. He would like to be directly involved in the relevant technical committees as a participant. Andreas Scherer, Head of Occupational Safety, Neenah Gessner Bruckmühl Furthermore we welcome to the ZELLCHEMING association:
