The Faculty Development Issue!

Throughout the year, this newsletter will highlight some of the great work being done in our department. This month's special topic is Faculty Development.

FPM Faculty Development

My first 18 months as Vice Chair of Faculty Development has been both busy and rewarding. Working with a dedicated committee of senior faculty, we have established a promotion and tenure process for our department that saw the success of 6 out of 6 actions during the 2021-2022 promotion season.

Congratulations again to Dr. Dio Kavalieratos for being granted tenure at the rank of Associate Professor, to Dr. Jennifer Mascaro for her promotion to Associate Professor with an area of distinction in scholarship, and to Dr. Ambar Kulshreshtha, Dr. Ashima Lal, Dr. Miranda Moore, and Dr. Megha Shah for promotion to associate professor with an area of distinction in teaching or service. The 2022-2023 promotion season has begun and we are looking forward to working with department faculty who have expressed interest.

Faculty development is not just about promotion, however. We encourage all faculty to watch the newsletter for announcements of School of Medicine faculty development events and resources. You can also access that information here at any time. We also plan to begin offering CV reviews to faculty who have been in rank as Assistant Professors for 4-5 years during which promotion readiness/strategy can be discussed in a transparent, equitable, and non-judgmental setting. For our faculty who are new or new-to-Emory, we are planning information sessions to introduce department resources that will help them hit the ground running.

Another project we’ve launched is the first-ever department-wide awards. We are accepting nominations and self-nominations now and we look forward to celebrating all of the nominees and recipients in the fall.

Finally, we’d like to invite senior faculty who are not already on the committee to join us. The commitment is for 2 years and we plan to add 2-3 new committee members this year. If you are interested, please reach out to me.

No Work and All Play!

The Emory Palliative Care Center and Division of Palliative Medicine held a "No work, all play" Day at Pinestone Farm this spring.  Faculty, staff, and fellows, along with their partners, children, and pooches, came out to enjoy a day of fun on the farm.  Feeding the horses, cuddling baby chicks and rabbits, and climbing on tractors were some of the fun activities.  Some folks even left with baby chicks and rabbits.  The Palliative Care Center hopes to make this an annual event!

American Journal of Medicine Open. 2022 May online. doi.org/10.1016/j.ajmo.2022.100015. This is the first published use of a realist evaluation approach to identify underlying causal mechanisms of a chronic-care treatment model implemented in a low- or middle-income country. This paper focuses on context as an implementation leverage point that enables the transferability of integrated diabetes and depression care models to alternative care settings in India and other low-resource settings. Findings from this evaluation highlight the resource and training gaps that hinder the implementation and sustainability of a multi-component, team-based intervention aimed at integrating depression treatment into routine diabetes care.

Also, Family Medicine Dr. Mo Ali served as guest editor and advisor for this issue of Health Affairs, which introduces a series on policies to address stagnating diabetes prevention, care, and equity in the US. Being of Service

Emory Farmworker Project:

This summer, the Emory Farmworker Project (EFP) brought care to 1,174 agricultural workers and family members across 20 clinics in Bainbridge and Valdosta. This year’s team of 41 PA students and 18 preceptors – including 5 current PA program faculty, PA program alumni, and Emory physicians – were joined by students and faculty from Emory’s DABSN and PT programs, Emory PharmD residents, and students from Mercer, Valdosta State, and AHEC Scholars from other schools across GA.  EFP is led by Dr. Jodie Guest (director and lead for Bainbridge week), Dr. Susy Alfonso (medical director), Emi Grill (senior program coordinator), Joe Borrillo (co-lead for Valdosta week), and Liz Valdes (co-lead for Valdosta week) with invaluable support from Khaliala Ward and Kaye Johnson.  Community partnerships continue to be foundational to the project and helped provide dental care, interpretation services, behavioral medicine, and take-home supplies and clothing distribution for the patients. In total, this year’s project included approximately 200 people across Emory and the community.

In Case You Missed It

New Publication on Assessment in Graduate Medical Education

A new publication by Emory Associate Professor of General Internal Medicine Robin Klein, MD discusses Association Between Resident Race and Ethnicity and Clinical Performance Assessment Scores in Graduate Medical Education (Academic Medicine, May 2022). Data included 3,600 evaluations by 605 faculty of 703 residents, including 94 (13.4%) URiM residents. Resident race/ethnicity was associated with competency scores, with lower scores for URiM residents in medical knowledge, systems-based practice, practice-based learning and improvement, professionalism, and interpersonal and communication skills. The interaction with faculty gender was notable in professionalism with men more than women faculty rating URiM residents lower than non-URiM residents. Resident race/ethnicity was associated with assessment scores to the disadvantage of URiM residents. This may reflect bias in faculty assessment, effects of a non-inclusive learning environment, or structural inequities in assessment

Appropriate Use of Race in Research Town Hall

Facilitated by Emory faculty Francois Rollin, MD, and Vanessa Van Doren, MD, and featuring Otis Brawley, MD, Alanna Morris, MD, and Michael Kramer, PhD, the Appropriate Use of Race in Research Town Hall encouraged participants to explore how is race utilized, reported, and interpreted in biomedical research. This important discussion considered whether the use of race as a variable in clinical research is practical or problematic and how investigators can responsibly participate in health equity scholarship that leads to meaningful change. Use the QR code below to read the take-home points, watch the video, and get additional resources.

Microaggression –a comment or action that subtly and often unconsciously or unintentionally expresses a prejudiced attitude toward a member of a marginalized group (such as a racial minority).

Examples of microaggressions:

  • Treating someone as a second-class citizen because of their gender, race, or sexual orientation
  • Complimenting a person born and raised in the United States on their English simply because they are not white
  • Telling a thin person that they should eat more
  • Making assumptions about someone based on their religion, age, or class
