Bishop's Homily for the Second Sunday of Lent

[Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, Honolulu]
Last July, I had the privilege of attending the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis. It was a great experience, but there were two particular moments I remember. One was in the stadium, where about 50,000 people were gathered. We were talking, laughing, meeting people from all over the country. But then the music began, the lights went out, and the Blessed Sacrament was processed into the stadium. There was suddenly utter silence from the crowds, and all were focused on the Lord Jesus, who was present with us. The second was during the Eucharistic Procession through the streets of Indianapolis. They lined us up in groups. The first group was women and men religious, and there were perhaps 2,000 in that group. The next group was priests, with perhaps 1,000. Then the bishops came out, about 100 in number. As each group came out, the crowds on the street cheered us. I thought to
myself, “This must be what entering heaven is like! The throngs of the friends of Jesus are there to joyfully greet you as you enter.” These experiences I recall from time to time, and they give me great joy. Read more...

Father Elias “Eli” Escanilla (1951-2025)
By Celia K. Downes
Hawaii Catholic Herald
Pastor Shared Love of Christ and Culture with All
Father Elias “Eli” Escanilla possessed a keen ability to cultivate many things — plants and animals; funds for church repairs and improvements; interest in the Philippines, his home country; and a sense of community and pride at the parishes where he served.
At Holy Rosary Church in Paia, Maui, where he began his time in Hawaii in 2009, and later at Sacred Heart Church in Hawi, Hawaii Island, he introduced Filipino traditions and culture. He took parishioners to the Philippines on pilgrimages, installed stained-glass windows featuring Filipino saints and brought back gifts after his vacations at home. Read more...

Walk Together in Hope and Compassion
|
 |
|
(NadyaEugene / Shutterstock.com)
From the Office for Social Ministry
“This Lent, as we share in the grace of the Jubilee Year, I would like to propose a few reflections on what it means to journey together in hope, and on the summons to conversion that God in his mercy addresses to all of us, as individuals and as a community.” - Pope Francis, Message for Lent 2025
As Pope Francis recently lay seriously sick in a hospital bed, he sent out a worldwide Lenten message, urging us to reflect on how we can respond to the most vulnerable among us. He compassionately suggested “It would be a good Lenten exercise for us to compare our daily life with that of some migrant or foreigner, to learn how to sympathize with their experiences … so that we can better advance on our journey to the house of the Father.” The pope underscores the parallel between the 40 days of Lent and the Israelites’ 40 years in the desert seeking the Promised Land. He also connects the Lenten theme of “conversion” and the Jubilee 2025 them calling all to be “Pilgrims of Hope.” Our Holy Father points out: “A first call to conversion comes from the realization that all of us are pilgrims in this life.” As fellow pilgrims in this life, we are called to
conversion and to learn from one another’s trials by walking together in hope. Read more...

CRS Rice Bowl Story of Hope from Nigeria

(Photo by Lauren Carroll for CRS)
Paying it Forward as a Lead Mother
Amina Bukar, a mother of five, is a well-respected leader and small business owner in Muna Moforo, Nigeria. In her village nutrition group, she teaches mothers how to prepare nutrient-rich porridge for their children to help them grow strong and healthy. This is important because in Nigeria, more than 25 million people face extreme hunger and lack access to nutritious food. Amina makes regular house visits to families in her community to provide support and knowledge for leading healthy lives.
Amina and her family used to live in their hometown of Marte. She owned a chicken farm and a store. Her husband, Garba, worked for a water and land conservation agency. But in 2014, violence in their community forced them to flee their village. Read more...

|
 |
|
Saturday, March 22, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “ʻOhana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “ʻOhana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Talks for Youth and Adults during March
|
 |
|
Mondays & Thursdays in March at 7:00 p.m.
St. Patrick Church, Kaimuki
The Catechism of the Catholic Church 1231 states “By its very nature infant baptism requires a post baptismal catechumenate. Not only is there a need for instruction after baptism but also for the necessary flowering of baptismal grace in personal growth.
All are welcome to join these talks on Mondays and Thursdays from 7-8pm at St. Patrick Church in Kaimuki. These talks will be given by the missionary team of the Neocatechumenal Way in Hawai’i: Jonathan & Nazarena Stenger with their seven children, Fr. John Wadeson, and Benjamin Paz a seminarian for the Diocese of Philadelphia.
The Neocatechumenal Way is a post-baptismal catechumenate for adults to help people grow in their faith by living with the Scriptures and liturgy so as to experience it in small communities within the structure of the Parish. Pope Saint John Paul II wrote in a letter: “I acknowledge the Neocatechumenal Way as an itinerary of Catholic formation, valid for our society and for our times.”
For more information, please contact Jonathan and Nazarena Stenger at (808) 268-3993.

Saint of the Week
Saint Patrick
c. 387–c. 460 or 493
Memorial – March 17
Patrick was born in Roman-ruled Britain to loving parents, perhaps as an only child. His father was a senator and a deacon, and his grandfather was a married priest. Despite his Christian upbringing and the clerical influences of his father and grandfather, Patrick struggled with his faith, stating later that when he was young he “did not know the true God.” This testimony, and the quotes to follow, come from his own hand, preserved in his Confessio, Saint Patrick’s short autobiographical confession about the workings of God’s grace in his life and ministry.
