The School Development Review was held in Week 3 and I thank the students, parents and staff who were involved in interviews and observations. The school is now waiting for the draft recommendations from the panel, but the preliminary findings were quite positive across the three Terms of Reference.
Excursions/field trips, sporting and cultural activities, Learning Hubs and visits to distance education students are continuing with more planned for this term and next term as well. Many students have enjoyed success and have moved on to compete at the next level in many of these activities, so well done. The Year 11 Excursion went ahead this week, and it appears all those involved have enjoyed the experience. This is despite many students and staff being unwell. We continue to monitor what is happening and are following the recommendations from the DoE and provide advice to students and parents as early as possible regarding upcoming planned activities.
A concern over the past several weeks is the number of students wearing incorrect jumpers to school. All students have received a school jacket and there should be no excuse for students to be wearing incorrect clothing. The school is able to support students and families in providing correct uniform and any other requirements needed. So please contact the Year Advisor or the school office for assistance, we are more than happy to support our students in achieving educational success.
Attendance at school is a major target for all schools in the state and our attendance data is being closely monitored. It is very important that students arrive at school and swipe into our database before the bell at 9.00am each day. The target the DoE has set us is for all students to have 90% or greater attendance. Many students are tracking well and achieving this target. Students who fail to swipe in before 9.00am register as having partial attendance even if it is only one or two minutes after the bell, so please be on time. Students who have a need to leave during the day should bring a note, stating the reason, to Mr Stewart, HT Administration, before 9.00am each day.
Year 12 students return to classrooms next week and their attendance at school is vital over the next six weeks to allow then to receive feedback from their Trial Examinations to complete course work and consolidate and finalise preparation and be ready for the examinations in term four. Many students have both Practical Examinations and Practical Projects due over the coming weeks. Graduation Assembly will be held on Thursday 22 September in the MPC.

75 students across Years 10, 11 and 12 embarked on a journey of discovery into the maze of inspiring possibilities at the CareerQuip 2022 Expo in Taree. This event, now the largest careers and post-school expo on the Mid North Coast, was held on the banks of Taree’s beautiful Manning River. Students spent over an hour and a half at the Expo, exploring their career options with over 80 exhibitors, including universities, private and vocational colleges, and student support services. Additionally, the Expo was enhanced by Australian Defence Forces recruitment, TAFE, NSW Police, and many local and regional trade and professional employer organisations.
For many students, this was the first time they had been to an Expo such as this and it was a great opportunity for them to gain some exposure to post-school options, be it further study, employment or an organised gap year. Students were surprised at how many different pathways there are to their dream course or job, and it was pleasing to see how engaged they were on the day.
As a major sponsor of CareerQuip 2022, MidCoast Council released a number of Apprenticeships / Traineeships available within the MidCoast Council area. For more information on these, visit the MidCoast Council careers website. The link is below.
Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 are reminded that they can follow up with the Careers Team if they need further assistance or information in their future planning, and to also keep an eye on the Millennium notices for information about Apprenticeships, Traineeships and casual/full time positions.
This year, over 25 students have now attained their Barista qualification, thanks to ETC Port Macquarie.
The Barista training provided students with the knowledge and fundamental techniques required to prepare a great cup of espresso coffee. Using commercial espresso machines, students learnt how to dose and tamp correctly, extract quality espresso, texture milk properly and grind adjustments. Throughout the day, students made a variety of different styles of coffee, including cappuccino, macchiato, latte and long black. It was great to see the student's coffee making skills and confidence grow throughout the day as they became competent baristas! For some of the more advanced baristas, time was spent on 'free pour' latte art.
All students who completed the two-day training received a statement of attainment for two nationally recognised competencies, SITHFAB005 Prepare and serve espresso coffee and SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety. Both are great qualifications to compliment student's resumes, provide them the opportunity to gain employment, or extend their skills in their current jobs.
The last Barista course for 2022 will be on the 29 - 30 August. The cost is only $50 (after being subsided by the School to Work funding). If you are interested, please see Ms Storok in the Careers Office for further information. Numbers are limited.

Year 7 Goannas Making Klepon
As a reward for excellent behaviour and fantastic progress in Indonesian in Term 2, 7 Goannas made an Indonesian sweet treat called klepon. These are coconut covered balls made from glutinous rice powder, pandan colour, and filled with palm
sugar (not palm oil!!). The boiled glutinous rice powder makes for a rubbery texture which is unusual in Australian cooking, and this is combined with a rush of molten palm sugar when bitten into. The verdict is out – some students loved it, others were not convinced.
Camden Haven High Book Club
The Camden Haven High Book Club had another great meeting this week, and would like to welcome its new members: Shayla, Olivia, and Ebony. 🙂 We will be voting on a new book in the next few weeks, so if you would like to join us, now is the perfect time! We meet every Tuesday at lunch in the STEM building (you'll find us huddled on cushions by the fireplace!)
Year 10's visit Courage to Care
Last Friday some of our Year 10 History students went on an excursion to the Glasshouse and museum at Port Macquarie. The students learned about the significance of the Town Green for the Birpai people and were fortunate to see Uncle Bill on the day. They were also privileged to get to meet and talk to a Holocaust survivor (Joe) who was forced to work in a Nazi labour camp in Budapest. This was part of the Courage to Care program which is running every day until the 28th of August at the Glasshouse in Port Macquarie if you and your family would like to attend. Thank you to Mr Hancock for organising this valuable excursion.
Year 12 Trial Examinations
Today was the final day for HSC Trials. Good luck to all our amazing Year 12 students.
National Quantum & Dark Matter Road Show
It is National Science Week and CHHS Year7, 8 and 9 students were fortunate to have a visit from the National Quantum & Dark Matter Road Show Team.
In Term Two, Emily, Year 8 Distance Education student attended CHHS to meet her teachers and have a tour of the school. The day started with Emily meeting her teachers in the school library, discussing her work in each subject. At times there was much laughter. Ms Williams gave Emily and her Mum Clare a tour of CHHS school. A highlight was the Agricultural plot. This was an absolute thrill for Emily as she is an animal lover. Time was spent cuddling the rabbit, meeting the cattle, and mingling with the birds. Emily thoroughly enjoyed her day at CHHS. Seeing the classrooms, playground areas, DE Administration building and meeting the wonderful DE Staff made a great visit. Emily is looking forward to the next visit.
Emily was also busy in the holidays. She attended the GERRIC program run by UNSW. The program offers education and development of gifted students in the first week. During the second week of the school holidays Emily attended the Youth At The Zoo (YATZ) program which operates twice a year at Taronga Zoo Sydney. This complemented Emily's passion for animals and was a fabulous, very informative event, with a wealth of education and activity-based sessions planned for the upcoming holidays when the YATZ build up their volunteer hours.
Manning and Great Lakes Learning Hubs
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Looking toward their future and seizing any positive opportunities that have come their way has become a focus for many students at our Learning Hubs. Students are building strong community ties through part time work, work experience, volunteer work and TAFE training. This has allowed them to forge stronger peer friendships as well as building on their interpersonal, emotional and social skills. The changes in the maturity levels and ability to work independently for some of our students has been remarkable. Their future is looking BRIGHT!

GET READY. The QLD and NSW School Community Blood Challenge starts today! 1 August – 31 October, 2021
Hi Team,
We’re so excited to have your school community join the QLD and NSW School Community Blood Challenge, which has just begun!
Lifeblood has set a target of 1,000 donations, which means it’ll take all of us, working together to make a life-giving difference to 3,000 patients in need.
33,000 blood donations are needed every week in Australia. Hospital demand for blood is at its highest levels in nearly a decade, so this is a great opportunity for your school community to unite as one and save lives.
We know schools are at the heart of our local communities, so let’s see how many donations your teachers, support staff, parents and friends can give, helping help patients like schoolgirl Eva?
You can take a look at the Donation Tally Page at any time throughout the blood challenge to see how your school’s donations are tracking, plus we’ll provide you with regular updates too.
And remember, I’m here to help, so if you have any questions or would like to make a Group Booking for members of your Lifeblood Team, please get in touch.
By giving together we can make a real difference ♥.
