WORLD DIABETES DAY SPECIAL EDITIONThousands of people with type 1 diabetes could be offered wearable technology to help them manage their condition following the publication of final draft guidance by NICE. An independent NICE committee has recommended people whose diabetes is not controlled with their current device despite best possible management with an insulin pump, or real-time or intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring, are offered a hybrid closed loop system. Eli Lilly and Company has announced that the MHRA has granted marketing authorisation for tirzepatide for weight management. The once-weekly GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) receptor and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist can now be used for weight loss and weight maintenance, as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. A world-first research programme that will identify adults at high risk of developing type 1 diabetes opens for recruitment today. Launching today on World Diabetes Day, the Type 1 Diabetes Risk in Adults (T1DRA) study aims to recruit 20,000 adults, aged between 18 and 70, from the general population to assess their risk. A newly launched document has been created by a diabetes team to educate healthcare professionals on how to monitor ketones in people with the condition. ‘Monitoring for ketones’ has been created as part of the ‘Start with the D1abasics’ inpatient campaign, which was launched in May earlier this year to provide healthcare professionals with basic inpatient diabetes knowledge. The sixth podcast from the Diabetes Times hears from Dr Punith Kempegowda – an established researcher in diabetes and endocrinology. Dr Kempwgowda, Assistant Professor in Endocrinology, Diabetes and General Medicine at the Institute of Applied Health Research, University of Birmingham, speaks about some of the projects he is involved with and how he financially helps his students.
