I recently attended a webinar about what Christian churches could do to help address the enormous problem of homelessness in Hawaii, which has more homeless people per capita than any other state in the nation. Two leaders from the River of Life Mission gave their testimonies. They talked about making a major shift in the way they reached out to the homeless. For decades, they provided three free meals a day with no questions asked to anyone who wanted to come. They thought this was a good thing, but realized they were in fact enabling people to the point that they became content to be homeless. So they took the risk to change their strategy. Now they provide one meal a week, but in different locations, to smaller groups of people. Those who serve have more interaction with the clients and are able to build relationships with them. These relationships foster trust, and once they gain trust, they can move the homeless to programs that can help them with whatever they need to address the roots of what is making them homeless. Next ‘Ohana Mass on Saturday, July 22

From the Office for Social Ministry

Next ‘Ohana Mass at Mary, Star of the Sea Parish on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. All are Welcome!

At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners have established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “‘Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

Livestream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint of the Week

Saint Augustine Zhao Rong and 119 Companions, Martyrs
1648 – 1930
Memorial – July 9

The 120 saints we honor today spilled their blood for the faith during the four centuries that followed. The first to be martyred was Father Francisco Fernández de Capillas, a Spanish Dominican priest. Father de Capillas spent his first two decades as a priest working in the Philippines as a missionary. In 1642, Father de Capillas arrived for his final mission in mainland China. He and his companions worked fervently for the next several years, winning over many converts and even establishing a lay order of Dominicans. In 1644, the less-tolerant Qing Dynasty replaced the Ming Dynasty, immediately threatening the missions. In 1647, Father de Capillas was captured, imprisoned, and tortured. Read more...
