Bishop's Homily for Palm Sunday

[Community of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace – at the Kamiano Center]]
I often fly to the Mainland, and the planes typically have individual screens on the seat-backs so that passengers can watch the movies of their choice. If I look up at any of those screens at any given time, I can usually see acts of violence taking place on most of them. Fist fights, gun play, vehicular violence, and cosmic wars are standard fare. Of course, the hero or heroine of the movie is usually able to endure tremendous threats and blows yet remains unharmed. It is amazing how much we allow ourselves to consume images of people dehumanizing other people; killing others without any remorse and seemingly without any consequences.
The story we just heard in the Gospel today could very well serve as the screenplay for one of these seat-back movies. There is the disloyalty of friends, betrayal for money, mockery of the victim, brutal scourging, and the entertainment spectacle of public crucifixion. Read more..

Longtime Kauai residents Ryden Williams and his mother, Takuyo Takahashi, will be fully received into the Catholic faith this Easter Vigil after embracing the peace, quiet reflection and spiritual depth they found in the Catholic faith.
Through their experience in the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults program at St. Catherine of Alexandria Church in Kapaa, they have experienced a sense of coming home to a global church where they feel connected, welcomed and spiritually grounded, thanks especially to the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians at the parish. Honolulu, March 22, 2026 - The Kona low system lingered with pockets of heavy showers even as it began to move away from the islands this past Sunday. (Theodore Trimmer / Shutterstock.com)
From the Office for Social Ministry
(Updated March 31, 2026)
A powerful Kona low storm system brought torrential rainfall, with 10 to 16 inches falling in a single day in some areas, triggering flash floods, landslides, and widespread damage. Community flood disaster relief efforts are stepping in to support affected residents, ensuring access to essential supplies during recovery. These efforts come as communities recover from what officials and news reports are calling the worst flooding event in more than decades.
In response to historic flooding across, Hawai’i’s Food Banks are partnering with trusted community organizations to host emergency food distributions. These community-led food distributions are specifically intended for residents impacted by recent flooding. Read more...

CRS Rice Bowl - Seeing Christ in the Migrant

From the Office for Social Ministry
“That is why God became flesh in Jesus, so that the clay of our humanity, shaped by the breath of his grace, might receive a new light, one capable of helping us to see ourselves, others and God in truth.” - Pope Leo XIV’s Angelus Message the Fourth Sunday in Lent 2026
During a recent Sunday of Lent, the scripture readings included the Gospel story of Jesus miraculously healing the man born blind. The words of the cured man, “I was blind, and now I see.” (repeated in the beloved hymn Amazing Grace) speak about transforming sight through the light of God’s grace. In his Sunday Angelus message, Pope Leo XIV reflected on this profound transformation. “While we were in darkness… God sent his Son as the light of the world to open the eyes of the blind and illuminate our lives.”
The Pope Leo proclaimed that Lent invites us to deepen our faith which “helps us to see things as Jesus himself sees them, with his own eyes: it is a participation in his way of seeing.” Read more...

Saint of the Week
Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion
Solemnity - March 29
This day could be thought of as a day of contradiction. The Mass begins with the reading of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and His joyous reception by the crowds who strewed palm branches before Him, crying out, “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.” Today, this inspiring scene is commemorated by processions of the faithful carrying palm branches into their churches. The contradiction, however, is experienced as the full narrative of the Passion of Christ is read, culminating with Jesus’ death on the Cross. Read more...
