A day of friendly competition & community spiritThis year’s Auckland President’s Day was one for the books! Hosted for the first time by Kohimarama Bowling Club, the event saw 29 clubs, plus a Bowls Auckland team, come together for an unforgettable day of friendly competition and community spirit. We even had some fresh faces with teams joining from Piha and Waiheke! Split into two competitive sections, Royal Oak dominated section one, while Bowls Auckland, last year’s champs, held strong in section two. In the end, Royal Oak’s score differential sealed the deal, and they proudly took home the newly donated St George trophy! It was a day filled with laughter, fun, and great bowling action. Thanks to everyone who participated and to Kohimarama Bowling Club for their warm hospitality. Epic moments at the U26 Singles!-- Henrietta Scott Last weekend, I joined seven other Auckland bowlers at the Living House Burnside U26 Singles event in Christchurch, and what an amazing time it was! The competition was fierce with players from NZ, Australia, and the Cook Islands. Our Auckland squad showed up strong—Aiden Takarua even defended his title, making him the first back-to-back winner! From nail-biting comebacks to all-Auckland finals, our team had an epic showing. Coaching excellence with Mike KernaghanThis week Bowls Auckland had the honour of hosting a series of dynamic coaching sessions led by Bowls New Zealand’s Head Coach, Mike Kernaghan. Over two days, participants of all levels—from beginners to representative players—gained invaluable insights and skills from one of the game’s most experienced minds. Tailored specifically for each group, the sessions were designed to inspire, educate, and uplift everyone who took part. Here’s a look at the highlights and the lasting impact these sessions promise for the bowls community! Interclub action returns for the new seasonWith a new event partner, the Taylor Bowls Interclub 8s and Half Day 6s are about to kick off with over 500 enthusiastic players from 26 clubs preparing to take to the greens across Tāmaki Makaurau. Spanning three Saturdays—19 October, 2 November, and 9 November—this event will have 22 venues buzzing with club spirit and competitive energy. The Half Day 6s event has seen a significant rise in teams, doubling from 8 to 16, indicating a growing interest in this format of bowls. Meanwhile, changes in the Men’s and Women’s divisions ensure smoother gameplay, promising a great experience for all involved. Game On for 1-5 Pairs this weekendIt’s an exciting weekend ahead, as Auckland's 1-5 Men’s & Women’s Pairs take to the green! 🌟 The Women’s schedule has been modified to accommodate the high number of entries—ensuring everyone gets to play undercover in a single day. Each team will play three games over four rounds. But, keep in mind a bye in the draw isn’t a win—your match will be scheduled in round four. If matches aren’t needed in round three, round four games can start early on available rinks. If you get the chance to get along in support, the Men are playing at Royal Oak & Remuera, and the Women are at New Lynn. Good luck to all participants! 🍀 Piggy on the Rail was a blast-- Philly Akaruru Piggy on the Rail on Saturday 5, October was a blast. We had an awesome day of bowls, but the rain decided to join the party halfway through our fourth game. No worries, though—everyone made the most of it, enjoying great company while waiting for a delicious lunch and the prize-giving. We are so grateful to all the competitors who filled the green. The winning team of the day featured our very own Doreen Jensen, along with Gaylene Kanawa, her husband John, and Maria Taka. The runner-up team was made up of David Akaruru, Sean, Thomas, and Fraema. Congratulations to all—well played! A massive thank you to our loyal sponsors and volunteers—your endless support truly made the day a huge success. We couldn't have done it without you!
