The last two weeks have been quite busy in terms of activities across the school. Year 9 resumed school after their trip and Year 10 also had a most successful trip to the Gold Coast. Staff were most forth coming in praising the students highly for their positive attitude and behaviour throughout both the excursions. Well done to all students and thank you to the staff who attended and made the excursions possible.

Tuesday of this week began with a Young Women in STEM Breakfast hosted by Surfing Australia and Acciona. Students from our school and feeder primary schools were able to participate in an open forum with elite and aspiring surfers who are also forging careers in various forms of engineering and other young women working in this field as well. One being a former student and past Dux of the school, Samantha Kirkwood. Samantha was also able to speak to the whole school and reflect on  her school life and her future aspirations. It was very inspiring to hear from these young women and hear them encouraging students to rise up and meet the challenges they may face to achieve their future goals. Thank you to Mr Langley and all the staff who supported him in this venture.

We also welcomed Year 6 students into the school for their Orientation Day.  It was a rich and fulfilling day for all the students and a big thank you to Mr Halliday and all the staff who took part in planning and managing the activities on the day. The Peer Leaders from Year 9 also must be congratulated on the great work they did, in meeting and greeting students and assisting them throughout the day. Year 7 2023 is a large group with around 130 students having been accepted for enrolment next year. All the students participated collaboratively with their peers and staff, a really good introduction to the school and what is available here for student It was also lovely to see so many parents at the information session in the afternoon.

Year 7 have had two days out of the school this week and hopefully the wet weather did not dampen their enjoyment of the activities at Stoney Aqua Park and Treetops.

The Annual Awards will be held from 9.15am, Tuesday 6th December in the MPC, with invitations having been sent to families of students being recognised for their achievements. Then on Thursday 8th, The Big Night Out, an extravaganza of talent will be on show, also in the MPC. The show begins at 7.00pm and is $5 entry at the door, something to look forward too next week.

For your next years’ diary, there will be the usual staggered return to school for students. Students in Years 7, 11 and 12 return on Tuesday 31st January with all students in attendance on Wednesday 1st February. The last day for students this year is Friday 16th December.

SRC Camp at Stoney Aqua Park

The SRC have been on camp at Stoney Aqua Park over the past two days and have had an absolute blast! New friendships have been made and there was some good healthy competition in the house relays and game of spoons (ask James how he did!) What an incredible group of passionate and caring young leaders we have at this school.

Year 7 at Stoney Aqua Park

Year 7 explored the land and water obstacles at Stoney Aqua Park on Thursday 1st December. Teamwork and encouraging mates to keep going, was a stand out quality of the students. The sly manoeuvres from the super speedy students to get to the top of the slides, proved a challenge to try and keep up with them. A fun day out.

Under 15 Boys and Girls and Open Boys Basketball

On Wed 30th Nov a big bus load of CHHS students played friendly basketball games in Port Macquarie against Wauchope and Melville High Schools and the Hastings College Port Campus. Games involved 3 groups: U15 Boys and Girls as well as Open Boys. Our CHHS teams had some wins and loses but the event wasn't an official competition.
The NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) knock out competition is the only event for each age division in the school year. If any school team is knocked out of the CHS comp that means they've had their ONE and ONLY day of planned competition. The key concepts of the Wednesday friendly event were inclusivity, skill development and fun.

Newcastle Hunter Learning Hub

The Newcastle and Hunter Hubs are powering on toward a glorious end to term with the festive season on the horizon. It was great to see so many of our students at the D.E. camp in week six, and we are already looking forward to camp next year! We have had some help from the loveable Taito the pug at Toronto Hub. Professor Taito is great with the students. Two of our wonderful year 12 graduates have written a little paragraph on why the Hubs were helpful to them on their school journey. Congrats to all for a successful year so far!
Liam on Hubs (Cameron Park and Toronto):
Learning hub has been helpful throughout my distance education because it provides a helpful space to focus on work and receive any assistance I might need from the teachers there. It has been a great benefit to have a regular place to go to each week as it was good to build a routine, and to know that if I had any work I didn’t fully understand or needed help with, there was a place I could go every Thursday where I could bring that work. The learning hub has been especially helpful with completing assessments and exams because it provides a space to focus solely on studying and completing those assessments, as well as having access to the teachers there and being able to contact my teachers at the school. Overall, the learning hubs provide a safe and helpful environment for my studies and have been extremely beneficial for my distance education.
Annie on Hubs (Warabrook and Cameron Park):
Learning Hubs have been helpful for me as it allowed me to have social interactions with other people on the same program. It has given me a place to learn and explore new opportunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Over the 3 years of attending learning hubs I have made some good connections with many different people. I have overall enjoyed my time at the learning hubs and found them extremely helpful.
