A golden start for Team Auckland

Team Auckland's combined strength, depth, and consistency clinched the overall victory at the first Quad fixture over North Harbour, Bay of Plenty, and Northland. With 71 rink points and a commanding +139 differential, Auckland’s Premier, Development, and 1–5 squads proved why they’re the benchmark across the board.

While competition was tighter this year, the collective performance shone through — from the Men’s 1–5s leading the charge to standout efforts across the Women’s divisions. Every rink counted, every bowl mattered, and Auckland once again rose to the top.

The result is a reflection of the preparation and coaching driving Auckland’s representative programme, with players across all levels showing grit, composure, and growing synergy. As the squads continue to fine-tune combinations and sharpen their play, the momentum from the Quad sets a strong tone for the season ahead.

Next stop: the Battle of the Bridge!

Rapid Roll Pairs: Week 1

The opening night of the Rapid Roll Pairs got underway this week, marking the start of a new and exciting twilight format for bowlers across Auckland. Despite the cold winds and a stubborn patch of rain, enthusiasm wasn’t dampened as play was shifted indoors to Remuera and Royal Oak, a smart call that kept the evening rolling and spirits high despite the lack of off-green extras.

The event is played using the UBC scoring system, which rewards precision and strategic intent. Quick ends and fast scoring made for an energetic atmosphere, with plenty of points always being added on, keeping everyone on edge until the final bowl is delivered.

After the dust (and drizzle) settled, Point Chev topped the table with the “Fockers” and the Scallywags, the only teams to take three wins on the opening night. The Fockers took a commanding +102 score differential, the Scallywags and a more modest +43. Mt Albert rounded out the top three with 2 wins and a draw, while several teams finished on two wins and varying shot differentials.

With the first week now in the books, the competition heads outdoors again next week, weather permitting, as Epsom Bowling Club takes its turn to host. Expect more fast-paced play, friendly rivalries, and plenty of action as teams continue to chase top spot in the Rapid Roll Pairs.

Top Up Together for Mental Health Awareness Week

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is all about connection. Aligned with the nationwide wellbeing campaign Top Up, the 2025 theme “Top Up Together” encourages us to weave the Five Ways to Wellbeing into everyday life through shared experiences.

Research shows that collective, community-based approaches to wellbeing have the greatest long-term impact. Whether it’s volunteering, taking part in cultural activities, learning something new together, or simply sharing time with others, social connection plays a powerful role in helping us feel valued, secure, and supported.

Let’s take the time to top up together — for ourselves, and for our communities.

Greenkeepers Field Day

-- Jess MacKinven

We had an awesome turnout this Monday for the September Greenkeepers Field Day, held at the Bowls Auckland office, with Tara from NZSTI joining us as guest speaker.

These sessions are designed to keep our greenkeepers up to date, informed, connected and engaged. This month’s focus covered some key topics — winter renovation, chemical control best practice, and health and safety management — along with expert insights on disease control to help set our teams up for success in the months ahead.

Our greenkeepers do a phenomenal job providing the bowling community with top-tier playing surfaces, often in challenging conditions. Supporting them to do this is essential, and we’re grateful to everyone who took the time to attend — and especially to our crew for putting in the hard yards to keep our greens in great shape all season long!

Strong progress across region for new Constitution

Bowls Auckland’s new Constitution has now been officially adopted and registered — a key step in strengthening the governance framework for our sport. You can view the new Constitution here.

Clubs across the region are also making impressive strides, with 23 clubs successfully updating and registering their constitutions. A huge congratulations to everyone involved in reaching this important milestone.

For those still working through the process, we’re confident good progress is being made and look forward to seeing more clubs complete their updates soon.
