Capturing and Distributing Photography in a Research Setting

Guidance is in place to ensure that researchers adhere to best practices for photography and video recordings.

  • Animal Research
The capture of pictures or video of vertebrate animals used for research or teaching must be approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), through completion of the photography section of the IACUC protocol. Camera or video recording in animal facilities also requires the permission of the University Attending Veterinarian (or designee).

  • Human Subject Research
There are many factors to take into consideration when using photography and/or video in research studies involving human subjects. For example, consider when the images will be collected, as well as how they will be used and stored. This will determine whether an additional release is required in addition to the informed consent document. Please consult with Human Research Protections when contemplating the use of photography/videos in human subject studies.

  • Drones
Pictures or video must not be taken using drones in areas where there is an expectation of privacy, such as locker rooms, bathrooms or dorm rooms--or where there is sensitive business or research data that may appear on a computer.

Drone flyers should also adhere to safety standards outlined here.

Office of Trade Compliance Webinar: Department of Commerce - Dual Use Commodities, Software & Technical Data

The Office of Trade Compliance will host a training session on February 25, 2022 at 1 p.m., entitled, “Department of Commerce: Dual Use Commodities, Software & Technical Data.” The Department of Commerce oversees the most important export control regulation that pertains to the university environment—the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). The Office of Trade Compliance (OTC) will describe the concepts within the EAR, and how it applies to commodities, software, and technical data commonly found in the university environment.

Registration is required.

This session is part of a new, 12-part, monthly training series to address "Export Control Fundamentals" in the academic environment. Sessions will be offered on a monthly basis. Although the content is appropriate for a general academic audience, most sessions will include direct application for the research community.  Questions may be directed to tradecompliance@pitt.edu

Semi-Annual Reviews, the Numbers

Starting in March, the IACUC will be conducting facility and animal use space walkthroughs as part of our semi-annual review, as required by federal laws and regulations. In addition to education and outreach activities all year long, every six months the IACUC inspects 32 different facility, laboratory, and field areas, which include 1,523 rooms. That’s over 3,000 visits a year!
