[Holy Family Church, Honolulu (Installation of Father Dario Rinaldi as Pastor); Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Wahiawa (Parish Feast Day)]
Recently a man approached me and told me I should confront one of our political leaders because this leader is saying unkind things about the Catholic Church. I can understand this man’s concern. Even though we are all aware that the Catholic Church has its faults and failings, we are still proud to be members of it. On the other hand, my response to the man was, “We should rejoice and be glad we are being criticized, just as Jesus said we should in the Beatitudes, because we are being criticized for living our faith in works, and not simply to be popular or well accepted.” The Catholic Church is still proclaiming the sacredness of every human life, not only by advocating against abortion, assisted suicide, and other actions that disrespect the sanctity of life, but by our great works in healthcare and social services, which enhance life for the most vulnerable. The Catholic Church is
still teaching that true marriage is only between one man and one woman, and that this life-long and faithful union is the basis for solid family life, which is good for everyone. The Catholic Church still insists that there are only two genders, male and female, and that we are happiest when we accept the way God has created us. As you know, these stances are far from popular these days, and we might be tempted to just “get along” with everyone and accept whatever the world says we should accept. The fact that we are hated by many, and even persecuted, is actually something that should cause us to rejoice and be glad. Read more...

Our Lady of Good Counsel School Celebrates 6 Decades of Learning
|
|
|
Our Lady of Good Counsel Church was filled with energy and joy Sept. 4 as its school celebrated 60 years of welcoming students. (Celia K. Downes / Hawaii Catholic Herald)
Hawaii Catholic Herald
Our Lady of Good Counsel School first opened its doors on Sept. 2, 1964, and for the past 60 years has provided quality Catholic education to students from across Oahu.
The Pearl City campus celebrated this milestone on Sept. 4 with a jubilee Mass, attended by the entire school as well as parents, alumni and former faculty and staff. State Sen. Brandon Elefante was also on hand to present a special proclamation from the state Legislature.
Bishop Larry Silva celebrated Mass. He was joined by more than a half-dozen priests, including Our Lady of Good Counsel Church’s pastor and parochial vicar, Sacred Hearts Fathers Santhosh Thottankara and Herman Gomes, and current and former pastors of churches in the Leeward Oahu and Central Oahu-Molokai vicariates. HOPE Services Hawaii Aids Houseless Impacted by Natural Disasters

From the Office for Social Ministry
“Let us pray for the Cry of the Earth. If we took the planet’s temperature, it would tell us that the Earth has a fever. And it is sick, just like anyone who’s sick. Are we listening to this pain?”
- Pope Francis Prayer Intention Video "The Cry of the Earth" for the Month of September 2024
Pope Francis’ monthly prayer intention for September 2024 calls us to recognize the critical connection between the Cry of the Earth and the Cry of the Poor. The Holy Father asks, "Do we hear the pain of the millions of victims of environmental catastrophes?" The Pope points out that as climate disasters such as floods, heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires increase, it is the poor who often bear the brunt of the pain. The pontiff reminds all that responding to these connected cries requires action on multiple levels—ecological, social, economic, and political. His September Prayer encourages us to “commit ourselves to the fight against poverty and the protection of nature, changing our personal and community habits.”
Recently when Hurricane Hone threatened to impact Hawaii, more than two dozen staff members of HOPE Services Hawaii sprang into action. In groups of two or three, they set out to help houseless residents as 18 inches of rain fell in some areas of East Hawai‘i, flooding roads in the Ka‘ū District and the Bayfront area in Hilo. ʻOhana Mass, Sep 28
|
|
| |
Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024
at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
From the Office for Social Ministry
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint of the Week
Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, Martyrs
Saint Cornelius: d. 253, Saint Cyprian: c. 200–258
Memorial – September 16
Today, we honor Saints Cornelius and Cyprian. Nothing is known about Cornelius’s upbringing and early life. In 251, he was elected as the twenty-first pope, a position he held until his death two years later. Cyprian, born Thascius Caecilius Cyprianus, was the son of wealthy pagan parents in North Africa. Well educated in Greco-Roman literature and rhetoric, he had a successful career as a lawyer and teacher. Around the age of forty-six, he converted to Christianity and gave much of his wealth away, devoting himself to prayer and asceticism. Within three years, he was ordained a deacon, a priest, and finally, the Bishop of Carthage, in modern-day Tunisia, North Africa, around the year 249. Read more...
