A common misconception, however, is that spending time on these supplemental activities will have a negative impact on the candidate’s research outputs and time to degree. A recent paper published in PLOS Biology shows that candidates who participate in career development activities, including internships, are just as efficient and productive as those who do not. According to the analysis, which looked at biomedical PhD students at ten US universities, there was no difference in time to degree or publications. In some instances, participants completed faster. These findings, which are also discussed in a Science Careers article, should hopefully provide reassurance about devoting time to career and professional development in addition to conducting your research.
