FEED CONFERENCE

The 2025 DOM FEED Conference, held on March 28, was a resounding success, bringing together over 70 faculty members virtually. This event explored the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on medicine, encompassing clinical practice, teaching, and research. The conference featured a series of engaging general sessions and breakout discussions, highlighting the latest advancements and challenges in the field.

Thank you to our phenomenal speakers and conference planning team for organizing an incredible event!

Some of the glowing comments we received from attendees at the 2025 FEED conference:

“The clarity of uses, benefits of AI juxtaposed to the important areas of caution; clear examples and illustrations provided was my favorite part of the conference.”

“My favorite part of FEED was the explanation of what AI is and isn't, as well as its potential and limitations. The talk from the experts from Stanford University was outstanding.”

DOM UPDATES

Spotlight on Jornada de Salud

Jornada de Salud (formerly Portal de Salud) is an Emory School of Medicine student-run clinic that provides health screenings and health education in a faith-based setting to members of the Spanish-speaking community in Gwinnett County. This group partners with Misión Católica in Lilburn, Georgia to assist the parish’s 29,000 Hispanic/Latinx members.

Students and faculty from the Department of Medicine and the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine have worked hard over the years to make sure this clinic has stayed alive, despite multiple hurdles in funding. When community partner, Portal de Salud, closed in the summer of 2024, this team mobilized to rebrand and maintain this important community partnership with the church and the patients who have come to know and trust us, as an independent student volunteer group on behalf of Emory School of Medicine.

In addition to serving this community, Jornada de Salud is a unique experiential interprofessional learning opportunity for MD and PA students to work alongside each other throughout the year. Student-led research and program development work has been presented at various levels.  Jornada de Salud won the Outstanding Education Poster Award at 2024 Emory Health Equity Day, in addition to two posters at last year's DOM Research Day, leading up to our first national presentation at the 2024 AAMC Learn Serve Lead National Conference.

Want to join? Want to learn more? Contact faculty leads, Susy Alfonso, MD (Family and Preventive Medicine), and Carlos Saldaña, MD (Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine) for more information.

Division of Digestive Diseases: Colon Saturday Clinic

Several Division of Digestive Diseases faculty and staff participated in the Colon Saturday Clinic which took place at the Dunwoody Ambulatory Surgery Center on March 22. It was a success, with 14 patients treated, all of whom expressed immense gratitude for the much-needed care provided on a convenient and patient-centered day.

This clinic had two procedure rooms running, staffed by DOM faculty members, Julia Massaad, MD, and Sobia Mujtaba, MD. Their dedication and expertise provided outstanding care to the patients. The success of this clinic would not have been possible without the efforts of several key individuals: Gill Green, Director of Patient Care Services; Sarah Kier, Senior Vice President of Patient Access; and Anna Fox, Division Administrator. Their hard work and commitment were instrumental in making this event a reality!

IM Residency Program: Annual Day of Service

Emory's IM Residency Program is giving back to the Atlanta community! Primary Care Track PGY2 annually volunteers with Open Hand Atlanta, an organization that provides health-promoting food directly to the homes of people who need it. This year our trainees (pictured right) packed meals for their Annual Day of Service.

We are proud to see our DOM members prioritizing service and giving back to those in need!

Recap: 2025 Physician Scientist Symposium

The second Annual Emory School of Medicine Physician-Scientist Symposium was held on Friday, April 4 in the Health Sciences Research Buildings. The event is funded by a NHLBI Stimulating Access to Research in Residency R38 program housed in the Departments of Pediatrics and Pathology (R38HL167243).

This year, the symposium boasted 156 attendees, eight oral abstract presentations, and 65 posters. Keynotes included W. Kimryn Rathmell, MD, PhD, 17th Director of the National Cancer Institute, and Allan Levey, MD, PhD, Director of the Goizeuta Brain Health Institute. The event also featured breakout sessions focused on career development. The symposium plays a key part in efforts across the School of Medicine to foster the next generation of physician-scientists from undergraduates to early career faculty.

We appreciate the hard work of the faculty and staff who made this event possible, and thank you to all of our speakers, presenters, and attendees for making this year's event such a success!

Congratulations to this year's award winners!

  • Best Oral Abstract Presentation: Jacob Berchuck, MD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Hematology and Oncology
  • Best Poster Presentation: Srishti Seth, Laboratory Assistant, Department of Pathology

RESEARCH CORNER

Recent NIH Grant Cancellation Notices

Many in our community have received grant cancellation notices. When Emory is the prime institution OSP is informed and we are also aware, but it is virtually impossible to find out if you receive a notice of a cancellation from a collaborator at another institution when they and not Emory is the primary awardee. We advise faculty to inform us of any grant cancellations through this form, below.

INFORM THE DOM OF GRANT CANCELATIONS

As we navigate these difficult times, we remain committed to research at Emory and would like to provide you with information on how to appeal these decisions. Please see the appeals process here and at the button below.

Questions? Please contact Kanika Chatkara, Program Coordinator, Research.
