RFTTEJOBS

G'day ,

I met Frank Shadforth at the Kimberley Pilbara Cattlemen's Association (KPCA) Conference in Broome last year. Frank is a true NT cattleman from Seven Emu Station on the Gulf of Carpentaria, east of Borroloola.

Frank’s father, Willie Shadforth, was a cattle drover and horse trader and among the first known Aboriginal people to purchase a pastoral lease in the Northern Territory, paying cash for Seven Emu Station in 1953. The Gulf country property has remained in the family ever since, passing from Willie to Frank and now to his son Clarry.

At the conference I don’t reckon five minutes passed without someone stopping to say G’day to Frank. It seemed everyone had worked with Frank, knew his family or had a story from the Gulf country to share. By the end of the day I’d started calling him 'Famous Frank' - a quiet legend whose reputation has been built the bush way: through relationships, respect and years of simply turning up for people.

Although he probably wouldn't like all the attention he's recently received...

Frank was recently awarded the Order of Australia Medal for his decades of service to young people in the Gulf and Northern Territory. As well as running cattle in the Gulf country, he’s invested his time helping both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal teens reconnect with their culture whilst teaching them about basic work skills including working on the cattle station, land management, tourism on country, hunting, fishing, construction and mechanical skills, bush tucker and bush medicine activities.

Frank joined a panel of speakers during the conference, discussing 'Walking together through legacy, labour and land', and delighted the audience with his simple but powerful message: "Slow Down!" he said. His view is simple: look after country, listen to Indigenous knowledge and take only what you need so the land stays healthy for the next generation.

For young people considering a career in agriculture, stories like Frank’s show the broader impact of working in the bush.

Good on you. Famous Frank.

Hooroo for now,

Simon
