Holy Days of Obligation

Please note that in the Diocese of Honolulu, in addition to all Sundays of the year, there are only two Holy Days of Obligation on which the faithful are obliged to attend Mass: December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary; and December 25, Christmas (which falls on a Sunday this year).  Be sure to check your parish’s Mass schedule for these special days of our faith.

Bishop's Homily for the Thirtieth Sunday of Ordinary Time

[St. Francis Church, Kalaupapa (Tenth Anniversary of Canonization of St. Marianne Cope)]

I can imagine a very lonely girl who felt so despondent about being taken away from her loving family because of leprosy that she cried out to God to send her a loving mother. She prayed with all her heart, trusting that God would hear her in her pain. And along came Mother Marianne and her Sisters, who were like mothers to her and the other girls. Could that little girl’s prayers have been the actual cause of the angels opening Mother Marianne’s heart to say yes to this difficult assignment?

God does indeed hear the prayers of those who cry out to him in their humility and in their need, as our Scriptures remind us today. Though God is not unduly partial to the weak, he often is very open to hearing their cries for help.  Read more...

The deteriorating St. Gabriel Mission in Keanae, Maui, along the Hana Highway burned to the ground between Oct. 1-2.

In a phone interview on Oct. 4, Missionaries of Faith Father Chacko Muthoottil said authorities won’t be able to report back on the cause of the fire for two weeks.

The day after the fire, Father Muthoottil, who is the pastor of St. Rita Parish in Haiku under which St. Gabriel is a mission, made the hour drive along the Hana Highway from Haiku to the Wailuanui Road church to survey the damage.  Read more...

Caregiver Education and Wellness Classes for the Month of November

From the Office for Social Ministry

Each Fall, families gather around the Holidays offering prayers and expressions of gratitude for the many blessings received throughout the year.  The commitment and selfless sacrifice provided by family members to aging, frail and ill loved ones often go unnoticed.  Be sure to include prayers of thanksgiving for the love and aloha of caregivers in your ‘Ohana.

As their way of supporting and helping to sustain our unsung Caregiver heroes, St Francis Healthcare offers a variety of education and wellness classes every month.  In November, the topics will range from Social Security, Mobility Training, Conflict Resolution (when making decisions for loved ones), Memory Loss, Parkinson’s and Kidney health.   Weekly exercise-like classes are also offered virtually.  These include Zumba, Lymphedema Care, Body and Brain Yoga Tai Chi and more!  Read more...

"Hope Heal Renew" - A Virtual Catholic Catechetical Conference, Nov 3-5

November 3 - 5, 2022

The theme of this year's Hope, Heal, Renew Catholic Virtual Conference is Gratefully Rejoicing as the Body of Christ can be understood as emblematic of Christian discipleship: that the Risen Christ accompanies us, teaches us, nourishes us by His Real Presence in the Eucharist, and sends us – gratefully rejoicing – to be life for the world as He is for us.

Whether participating as an individual, household, or watch party, you will find a welcoming community of faith as we explore this theme through experiences of prayer, liturgy, and spiritual retreat; lively and interactive presentations; conversation and laughter during “meet ups” with fellow participants, conference planners and exhibitors; and so much more.

One Community Center
St. John Apostle & Evangelist Parish
95-370 Kuahelani Ave., Mililani

Twenty-five years have passed since the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, sparking a renewed interest in this spiritual giant of the 20th century. Filmed on 5 continents and featuring unprecedented access to both institutional archives and the apostolates of the Missionaries of Charity, this film reveals not just who Mother Teresa was, but how her singular vision to serve Christ in the poor continues to be realized through the Missionaries of Charity today. This is far more than a documentary. It is at once a soaring tribute to a spiritual icon, a powerful witness of authentic Christian charity, and a guidepost for all who seek hope in our turbulent times.

Saint of the Week

Saint Crispin (Also known as Crispinus)
Third Century
Memorial – October 25

Member of the imperial Roman nobility. Brother of Saint Crispian with whom he evangelized Gaul in the middle 3rd century. Worked from Soissons, France, they preached in the streets by day, made shoes by night. Their charity, piety, and contempt of material things impressed the locals, and many converted in the years of their ministry. Martyred under emperor Maximian Herculeus, being tried by Rictus Varus, governor of Belgic Gaul and an enemy of Christianity. A great church was built at Soissons in the 6th century in their honor; Saint Eligius ornamented their shrine.  Read more...
