Advance Care Planning Week

National Advance Care Planning Week is from 16 to 22 March. All Australians are encouraged to embrace the theme, ‘Your story, your choice’ and access a range of resources to plan their future care. You can head to Advance Care Planning Australia for resources to start planning, access help and support or request a free starter pack. We also have a limited number of hardcopy resources for you to pick up at our neighbourhood centres – drop in and chat to our centre staff for more information and guidance.

Bee hotel workshop

Join us for a workshop on 4 March at Kensington Neighbourhood Centre to learn how to make native bee hotels with Clancy, The Bee Man. Learn about Melbourne's local bees, the importance of our native pollinators and how you can help. Build your own native bee hotel to take home. Explore all events happening during Insect BioBlitz 2026, 1 to 7 March.

Neighbour Day

Come and join us at South Yarra Senior Citizens Centre for Neighbour Day - a day of connection, community and sustainability - on Sunday 29 March. This event will be the last event in our Fawkner Park Summer Series, with events running throughout March to foster community and social connection.

International Women's Day

This International Women's Day (IWD), celebrate women and learn on this Badass Women of Melbourne Tour or attend an inspiring IWD talk on 10 March about Brettena Smyth, one of Melbourne's earliest proto-feminists. WIRE's Great Debate is also returning for its third year at the Capitol Theatre on 11 March at 6pm.

Fitness in the park

Get active in your neighbourhood with free outdoor fitness classes in local parks and gardens. Suitable for all fitness levels. Next session: Boxing on 25 March.

Intergenerational yoga classes

Join a fun, 45-minute weekly yoga class for older people and international students. It's suitable for all levels and is followed by a tea tasting where participants can share conversations about culture, memories and everyday life. Wednesdays, 11am to 12.30pm in North Melbourne. More information.

Tai chi in Parkville

Join our five-week tai chi program in Parkville for older people to improve balance, flexibility, and overall wellbeing through slow, gentle movements in an outdoor environment. For the launch of the program on 18 March,  we invite older people and carers to join us at 3pm for afternoon tea prior to the class starting.

Making sense of government services

This series of free, in-person information sessions is run by Services Australia and the Department of Health, Ageing and Disability. They provide clear, practical information on how to access services such as Centrelink, MyGov and My Aged Care, along with time to ask questions. Five sessions, starting Thursday 5 March at various locations in the City of Melbourne.

Dementia care and support

The Dementia Care and Support Program aims to make a positive difference to people living with dementia and carers. You can expect fun group activities, dedicated educational sessions and a lunch to share. Run in partnership with Australian Multicultural Community Centres. Free. Tuesdays, 10.30am to 2pm - starting 10 March for five weeks. To register, register below or call 0432 099 850.

Connections Program

If you’re an older person living in the City of Melbourne (or care for someone who is), you can contact the Connections Program Lead for information about aged care and other activities in your community. Meet them in person on selected dates at various locations between 10am and 2pm.

Ageing Well Expo

Plan ahead and embrace ageing with confidence at the Melbourne Ageing Well Expo, 20 and 21 March at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. This event is free to attend and aims to offer people and their families the tools they need to make informed choices.

The 'no worse off principle'

As part of the new Support at Home (SaH) program, the Commonwealth Government introduced a 'no worse off principle.' This only applies to the fees you personally pay, not to the rate your provider charges. For assistance, you can visit the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission website or call 1800 951 822. You can also get help by visiting Elder Rights Australia (ERA) or calling 1800 700 600.
