New department: Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation - TBD

July 1 marked the official launch of the College of Medicine Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or PM&R. The college's newest department is home to 11 faculty members, four second-year residents and four first-year residents.

Baristas for a day

UF College of Medicine Dean Colleen Koch and UF Health Shands CEO Ed Jimenez helped welcome residents, fellows and students to a new year by serving as volunteer baristas at Opus at the UF Health Shands Hospital atrium July 14.

You can spot them behind the coffee counter again July 27 at the UF Health Heart & Vascular and Neuromedicine hospitals and July 30 at the UF Health Shands Cancer Hospital.

Giving the gift of listening

All 60 students from the UF School of Physician Assistant Studies class of 2023 received stethoscopes during orientation last month, a gift made possible through alumni support. Students sent notes of thanks to the Gator PAs for their warm welcome. 

"I hope to use this stethoscope to not only listen to the hearts of my patients but also to touch their lives in a meaningful way," one student wrote.

Focused on the future

UF ELAM alums — faculty who have completed or are enrolled in the Hedwig Van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Medicine Program — met late last week with the dean’s project management team. The meeting was the first of several faculty focus-group discussions planned as part of the second phase of the College of Medicine strategic planning process.

Researchers use AI to develop precision dosing for treatment aimed at preventing dementia

A team of UF researchers — including a doctoral student in the department of neuroscience — has found the use of a noninvasive brain stimulation treatment paired with cognitive training holds promise as an effective, drug-free approach for someday warding off Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
