May Newsletter is here!

Welcome to our monthly mental health carer newsletter.

As we move into the cooler months of the year, we hope that you're managing to take care of yourself as well as your loved one. It's so easy to say "take care of yourself too", but we do understand that it can be difficult. We also get that sometimes your happiness is linked to how happy your loved one is. If you're struggling, or would like to chat to somebody, please call our support line on 1300 554 660.

In this month's edition we again share with you our upcoming events and also share some suggestions for activities for your loved ones.  We hope you find this newsletter helpful and informative. Remember, you are not alone in this journey.

You're invited to our Arafmi Craft & Connect, held on the second Tuesday of each month from 9:30am - 11:30am at 6 Ambleside Street, West End.

The group will be facilitated by our very crafty Jenelle and the next catch-up will be on Tuesday, 16 May.

Each month we will provide a different crafting project, but you’re also welcome to bring along a long-term project and work on it while you enjoy morning tea and much deserved time out.

If you have any questions, please contact us at carersupport@arafmi.com.au or 3254 1881.

We've saved this spot in the newsletter for any contributions we've received from carers. This month Robyn sent us some movie suggestions. These particular movies focus on the role of caring, in all its many forms. Some movies are streamed or you can rent or buy them online.

The Carer

Sir Michael Gifford alienates everyone around him as he suffers from an incurable illness. When his daughter sets him up with a companion who is a refugee, surprising changes begin to occur.

Wonder

Based on the New York Times bestseller, this movie tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman, a boy with facial differences who enters the fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time.

Black Balloon

All Thomas wants is a normal adolescence but his autistic brother, Charlie, thwarts his every opportunity. Will Thomas, with the help of his girlfriend, Jackie, accept his brother?

Our choice for May Book Club is The Surgeon of Crowthorne by Simon Winchester.

The making of the Oxford English Dictionary was a monumental 50 year task requiring thousands of volunteers.

One of the keenest volunteers was a W C Minor who astonished everyone by refusing to come to Oxford to receive his congratulations. In the end, James Murray, the OED's editor, went to Crowthorne in Berkshire to meet him. What he found was incredible - Minor was a millionaire American civil war surgeon turned lunatic, imprisoned in Broadmoor Asylum for murder and yet who dedicated his entire cell-bound life to work on the English language.

New Plans for Summit Restaurant at Mt Coot-tha!

While this isn't something that is currently happening, we thought it was exciting enough to share with you to keep in mind for the future.

Recently lodged plans with Brisbane City Council show that the owners are planning to extensively refurbish the currently closed heritage-listed restaurant, adding in a casual bar with an extensive deck to enjoy the views. They also plan to pull down the old cafe to build the Pavilion, a stunning two-level venue that will feature a dining space, gin distillery and rooftop garden.

Day Trip to Queen Mary Falls

Why not pack a picnic, hop in the car and head to Queen Mary Falls for something a bit different? While it is a few hours drive, it's like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Voted as one of Queensland’s best waterfalls, the 40-metre natural beauty is tucked in amongst the ancient World Heritage Gondwana Rainforest on the edge of the Scenic Rim.
