Alumni Spotlight: Answorth A. Allen, MD

We are proud to highlight alumnus Answorth A. Allen, MD, associate surgeon-in-chief and deputy medical director at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS).

Dr. Allen serves as the lead team orthopedist for the New York Knicks and recently celebrated his 20th year with the team. The Knicks marked this milestone with an on-court ceremony. We are sure he was no doubt instrumental in keeping the Knicks healthy on their most recent playoff run, resulting in their first championship win since 1973.

His past roles as a team physician for the New York Mets and the Long Island Rough Riders soccer team emphasize his influence in sports medicine.

In addition to his clinical accomplishments, he has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters focused on injuries of the shoulder, knee, and elbow.

Through his commitment to patient care, research, education, and innovation, Dr. Allen continues to make a lasting impact on the field and serves as an outstanding example of the excellence fostered through his education and fellowship here with us at UPMC-PittOrtho.

UPMC-PittOrtho Make Strong Showing at 2026 AOSSM and Herodicus Society Meetings

UPMC Sports Medicine and PittOrtho had a strong presence at both the 2026 American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Annual Meeting in Seattle and the Herodicus Meeting in Napa Valley, with faculty, fellows, residents, students, and alumni contributing to scientific sessions, presenting research, leading educational discussions, and earning prestigious national awards.

Several faculty members were invited to serve as presenters and moderators during AOSSM's educational programming.

Research was well represented in Seattle this year, through numerous podium and poster presentations covering topics including ACL reconstruction, shoulder instability, meniscus root repair, Achilles tendon ruptures, hip preservation, arthroplasty outcomes, patient-reported outcomes, and sports medicine policy.

Dr. James P. Bradley received the Robert E. Leach, MD Sports Medicine Leadership Award, AOSSM's highest honor (see further in our newsletter today for a highlight of Dr. Bradley’s award and a video link!)

Additional highlights included Dr. Justin Arner presenting alongside his fellow AOSSM/ESSKA Traveling Fellows about their international fellowship experience, and more than 30 current and former University of Pittsburgh trainees, faculty, and alumni gathering for a reunion happy-hour overlooking Seattle's Puget Sound and harbor.

Herodicus Society Meeting
Following AOSSM, Pitt faculty and alumni continued to demonstrate their leadership within the Herodicus Society during its annual meeting in Napa Valley, California.

Dr. James Bradley served as Chair of the Membership Committee, while Dr. Volker Musahl chaired the Nominating Committee. Dr. Albert Lin contributed as a member of the Awards Committee, and Pitt alumnus Dr. Lee Kaplan served as a Member-at-Large on the Executive Committee.

UPMC-PittOrtho representation was also felt in the presentations at this year’s meeting with Drs. Musahl and Lin serving as presenters and moderators alongside alumni including Drs. Robin West, Constance Chu, and Benjamin Ma.

The meeting also welcomed Dr. Craig Mauro as a newly elected Herodicus Society member for 2027.

The continued visibility of UPMC-PittOrtho faculty, trainees, and alumni at both AOSSM and the Herodicus Society reflects our longstanding commitment to advancing orthopaedic sports medicine through leadership, education, and research.

Dr. James P. Bradley Receives the 2026 AOSSM Robert E. Leach, MD Sports Medicine Leadership Award

Established in 1973, the Robert E. Leach, MD Sports Medicine Leadership Award honors an individual who has provided outstanding service to the orthopaedic community and made significant contributions to the field of sports medicine. Selected by the AOSSM President, President-elect, and Vice President, the award recognizes a lifetime of leadership, innovation, and dedication to advancing the specialty.

Unable to attend this year's AOSSM Annual Meeting in Seattle, Dr. James P. Bradley, Associate Professor, and PittOrtho alumni, received a special surprise when AOSSM Vice President Matthew T. Provencher, MD presented the award in person while Dr. Bradley was speaking at The Steadman Clinic in Colorado.

We are proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition of Dr. Bradley’s remarkable career and enduring impact on sports medicine. As a department, we are deeply grateful for the knowledge and leadership he continues to share with all of us.

UPMC-PittOrtho Celebrates 32 Years of Service: Lisa Arrisher-Brown

After 32 years of dedicated service to the University of Pittsburgh Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, we congratulate Lisa Arrisher-Brown on her retirement.

For many years, Lisa served as Dr. Freddie Fu’s executive assistant, quietly working behind the scenes to keep countless projects, visits and daily operations running smoothly. She played a pivotal role in supporting hundreds of international fellows, including our own Dr. Volker Musahl, spending countless hours ensuring visas were secured, travel plans were coordinated, and each visitor felt welcomed as they adjusted to life in Pittsburgh.

Following Dr. Fu’s passing, Lisa transitioned into a broader administrative role and continued to be an invaluable member of our department, always ready to help wherever she was needed.

While we will miss her steady presence and commitment to others, we are incredibly grateful for the impact she has made over the past three decades. We thank Lisa for her years of service and wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement.

This month marks an exciting milestone for the BMRC BioBank with the collection of our first pediatric sample at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. This important achievement was led by Dr. Stephen A. Mendelson, Acting Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, UPMC Children’s Hospital.

By expanding our BioBank to include pediatric samples, we are strengthening opportunities for breakthrough musculoskeletal research that can benefit children, adolescents, and young adults. This expansion broadens the impact of our research efforts and brings us closer to developing new discoveries that improve patient care across all stages of life.

We are grateful to Dr. Mendelson and the UPMC Children’s team for their hard work and look forward to advancing research that helps patients of all ages live healthier lives.
